Graves Yamaha’s Mark Burkhart, the 2007 AMA Supermoto Champion, and Brandon Currie, the 2007 AMA Supermoto Lites Champion, will race in the WERA West regional road races Sunday at California Speedway, in Fontana, California. Both of the men rode on 2007 YZF-R6 Supersport bikes (as raced by Graves Yamaha’s Josh Herrin in 2007) during the Fastrack Riders track day Saturday and ended the day with huge smiles on their faces. “I loved it. I thought it was fun,” Burkhart told Roadracingworld.com. “I need some more time on one, I think, to really get going. I think I could go better, but it’s really tough out there because there’s so many people. And you don’t know what some of the people are going to do. But it’s fun, definitely fun.” The deal that brought Burkhart and Currie to the road race track actually started with former Graves Yamaha Supermoto racer Doug Henry, who had asked Team Owner Chuck Graves if he could test one of Graves Yamaha’s road race bikes if he won the 2006 AMA Supermoto Championship. Burkhart and Currie, both big fans of road racing, knew of that deal and asked for a similar promise going into the 2007 season. “I’ve always wanted to road race ever since I was 15, 16 years old,” said Burkhart, who added he rode a sportbike on a road course for about 15-20 minutes one time eight years ago. “I just never really had a bike or enough money to do it. So I kind of asked him [Graves], and Brandon wanted to do the same thing. We made a gentleman’s agreement that if we won we would get a couple of days to just go play around and ride.” And Graves told his Supermoto riders that if they felt comfortable enough they could race the bikes with WERA. Both men told Roadracingworld.com that they planned to do just that. “I think we’re gonna race,” Currie said Saturday evening. “I’m going to go sign up right now. Might as well. I don’t know why we shouldn’t.” “Yeah, we’re both gonna do four different classes tomorrow, just go out and have some fun,” said Burkhart. Burkhart and Currie will face stiff competition in their road racing debut as many of California’s hottest road racers will also race Sunday.
