Sutton Takes the Championship Lead at OMRRA’s Season Opener at Portland International Raceway.

2014 WMRRA #1 plate holder, Ryan Sutton of Camano Island, WA had a dominating weekend at OMRRA’s opening round at Portland International Raceway. Sutton’s Suzuki GSX-R1000 set the pace all weekend in the Formula Ultra class leading from flag to flag both races. Oregon contenders, Dan Wilson’s EDR Performance built BMW S1000RR and Zlock Racing’s Kevin Pinkstaff’s ZX-10R traded second and third place finishes on Saturday and Sunday. Sutton leads the KFG Racing Formula Ultra Championship by 14 points over Wilson and Pinkstaff tied for second. The trio would meet on last time late in the weekend to contest the Open Superbike race which is part of the Clubman Championship. Sutton lead early but a broken shift linkage late in the race relegated Sutton to fourth. Dan Wilson took over at the front with Kevin Pinkstaff in tow. Wilson’s asphalt-melting BMW had issues with tire wear and in the final corner of the race Pinkstaff was able to get around Wilson for the victory. Rounding out the top five were Sam Verderico and Tony Porter who spent the weekend bringing the new Yamaha R1 up to speed. In the coming rounds, the front is going to get faster and more crowded.

The Cheshire Motorsports Clubman Championship is a best of two classes that covers many types of bikes up and down the paddock from UltraLightweight Supersport to Open Superbike. Returning Canadian, Oliver Jervis took the early lead in the championship winning GP Twins and Middleweight Superbike aboard a Zlock Racing SV650. Two points back of Jervis, Jason Doody of Vancouver, WA had a career weekend after overcoming a major mechanical in Friday’s practice. Doody procured another bike that evening, worked through the night and was able to make the grids the rest of the weekend. Employing tenacity, Doody was able to overcome adversity and battle to wins in 600 Supersport over Beaverton Motorcycles-sponsored Chris Jablonski and Washington’s Paul Capps. Doody added to his win total in 750 Supersport over Capps and young-gun Jeremy Coffey. Capps would take charge on Sunday, winning 600 Superbike over Coffey and Doody then repeat with a win in 750 Superbike over Coffey and Jablonski. Capps sits third in the championship merely one point behind Doody. These riders will have a hard-fought season ahead of them in their quest for the Clubman Championship. Peter Kahn and Micheal Caravatta hold fourth and fifth in the championship, respectively. This championship will be hotly contested with just 7 points separating the top five.

In the Langlitz Leathers Vintage Championship, defending 2014 1v champion, Mica Grohn of Portland, OR jumped out to the early lead in the championship with wins in Vintage Lightweight and 2nd place finishes in Vintage Middleweight. Portland’s Jon Munns slide into the second spot overall by placing his vintage Honda on the top step of the podium in Middleweight Vintage. Sitting third in the championship, Ryan Shanahan had a great ride Sunday, locking into an epic battle with championship leader Grohn in Vintage Lightweight. Shanahan sits third tied with Paul Guadio’s and his vintage Ducati 250. The three OMRRA Championships are already heating up and the remainder of the season will showcase some of the best club racing in the country.

The Oregon Motorcycle Road Racing Association (OMRRA) developed the two-race per weekend Formula Ultra Championship, the ‘your best two classes’ Clubman Championship and the two-race per day, Olympic-scored Vintage Championship, promoting safe, competitive road racing in all categories. OMRRA, incorporated in 1972 as a non-profit, volunteer run organization, has members ranging in age from 12 to over 70, racing motorcycles of many brands, sizes and ages. OMRRA operates at Portland International Raceway, a city park and world class track. For more information, visit www.omrra.com and join us at www.facebook.com/omrra.racing
