Sutton Sweeps 6 Races in front of his Family at WMRRA 4th Round

Beautiful sunny weather blessed WMRRA’s 4th round of racing July 26-27 at the Ridge Motorsports Park in Shelton, WA. The 90 degree temperatures brought many racers and spectators out to experience a fantastic weekend of races. Ryan Sutton invited his whole family out for the show, including his mom, dad, wife, kids, along with extended family and friends, putting on quite a display of riding for all to enjoy!

Chromie, (Ryan’s nickname in the club because his first track day he showed up on a Kawasaki ZX-10R with chrome wheels) seemed to feed on the hot weather, riding like he was on fire. He won all six races he entered and swept the weekend in 600 SS, 600 SB, Formula Ultra both days, Open SS, and Open SB. His only disappointment of the weekend was not breaking his own track record from last year, even though he came within 0.3 second of doing so.

Sutton was all smiles when talking with sponsor and friend Barry Wressell from KFG Racing / GP Suspension and said, “I had so much fun this weekend. Having my whole family out made it feel like old times and was really cool!”

Sutton was seen several times giving his two kids rides in the pits on his little KLX110 on the back wheel, showing them how it’s done Sutton family style! Walking away after the successful weekend, KFG Racing’s Sutton extends his lead over EDR Performance’s Mark DeGross in the Overall Championship 707 points to 660 points, respectively.

WMRRA had a large SOTP (Sounds of The Past) weekend which was well attended. There were over 20 vintage entries, the largest vintage field the club has seen for about five years. Twelve bikes were entered in the Hinshaw’s Motorcycle Store 160 Superbike Shoot-Out which includes a Le Mans-style start, thus making it very entertaining to watch . Neil Jensen took an early lead but was passed by eventual race winner Mick Hart on lap 2. Daric Cheshire and Mica Grohn rounded out the top 3.

In the Sounds of the Past vintage race, Mick Hart took Paul Brodie’s beautiful 1919 Excelsior “clone” to a commanding win, turning 2:00 laps on a bike with an exposed valve train!!! Hart was chased closely by Vashon Island resident Marc Brown on his Honda CB350. Further back in the pack, Daric Cheshire crossed the line ahead of Mica Grohn in a very close battle for the 250 Vintage crown. Both riders were among a large crowd of OMRRA vintage racers that made the trek from Portland to take part in the WMRRA Sounds of the Past event.

Representatives for the Vintage Motorcycle Enthusiasts club (VME) were on hand with a display of 15 beautiful street and race bikes under the Cycle Gear of Tacoma tent. Top honors in the show and shine went to Ted King 1954 Velocette Mac, Steve Henderson 1965 Ducati 250 Diana, Ron Rumbolz ex-Les Cook 1965 Norton 750.

In 500 SuperSport, WMMRA’s youngest female racer ever participated in her first event. Fifteen-year-old Emily River earned a 3rd while her mom, Cherie River, took a second on their Skagit Powersports / Cycle Gear Ninja 250’s. The two of them make up WMRRA’s first mother/daughter team and have been working hard to learn the whole road racing paradigm. Emily thanked Premium Rush owner Phil Melnyk for his mentoring and Cherie gave 2Fast Track Days Mark DeGross a big plug for his help with her on her lines, cutting 16 seconds off her best lap time. The two were kept from the top spot on the box by Lane Taylor on his Ninja 250 who took a solid win in the class.

Rising star David Kohlstaedt, a 10-year-old flat track racer who is transitioning to road racing, was able to chop another eight seconds off his best lap time at The Ridge last weekend, proving we have only begun to see the potential in this young racer. Keep an eye on him. He will be racing for WMRRA’s #1 plate before we know it!
