Lap Records Again Fall to Sutton at The Ridge

WMRRA Round 7 The Ridge Motorsports Park Shelton, Washington 8/31/13 – 9/2/13

Ryan “Chromie” Sutton again ran away with all premier class races, extending his points lead in the overall championship and setting an official lap record at The Ridge Motorsports Park of 1:37.826 in Sunday’s Formula Ultra race aboard his Suzuki GSX-R1000. The previous lap record of 1:39.404 was held by Adam Robarts on a Honda CBR1000RR.

While Sutton was again left to his own devices ahead of the pack, points-seeking battles were fought all through the race weekend. Allister MacKinnon climbed to third place overall, and Kyle Staples moved up to second overall after both had a productive race weekend.

The Ridge hosted the second and final NW Endurance Cup race of the season: a two-hour Ninja 250 endurance race and five-hour Lightweight, Middleweight, and Heavyweight endurance races. Rod Powell, co-owner and general manager of The Ridge Motorsports Park, participated in the Middleweight endurance race, which was his first-ever motorcycle road race. Rod teamed up with Raymond Parsons and Damon Wells on a Yamaha YZF-R6 donated by Chris Sarbora. Chris Sarbora has previously set an official 113-mph lap at the Isle of Man TT.

The Ninja 250 endurance started off on a rain-soaked track, which quickly made for two downed riders, both of whom only suffered minor lowsides and were able to rejoin after repairs. The race finished on a warm and dry track surface. The Lightweight, Middleweight, and Heavyweight endurance races started on a hot, dry track. However, two-thirds through the race, conditions changed because of a passing rain squall. Some teams chose to shag a set of rains before switching back to slicks on a quickly drying track. With eight teams and after five hours of racing, there were no crashes or mechanical DNF’s. The previous WMRRA number 1 plate holder, Eli Edwards, came out of retirement once again to take part in the endurance race.

The sponsors for the endurances were Canright Construction, Al’s Glass, Atlas Construction Specialties, Limback Lumber, and Seattle Floor Service.

The Washington Motorcycle Road Racing Association was formed in 1974 to organize and promote the sport of motorcycle road racing in Washington State. Currently, WMRRA races at two tracks in Washington: Pacific Raceways in Kent, Washington, and the newly constructed Ridge Motorsports Park in Shelton, Washington. To learn more, go to www.wmrra.com.
