Ryan Sutton wins WMRRA 2014 Overall Championship

Ryan “Chromie” Sutton had a commanding lead of 94 points over Mark DeGross prior to coming into Round 6 of WMRRA’s finale round September 27-28 at The Ridge Motorsports Park, in Shelton, Washington. All Ryan needed to do was score some points in a few key races and he’d wrap up his second overall championship in as many years. However, his opening race of the weekend, which wasn’t one of his 3 classes in his overall total, didn’t go quite as planned.

“I came out of Turn Three and was trying to reel the guys back in a bit and just lost the rear a bit,” exclaimed Sutton on Sunday, describing his accident on Saturday.

Ryan tossed his ZX-6R on the ground in the Open SS race Saturday, dislocating his arm. While this wasn’t one of the classes for his overall points total, had he not crashed he still would have benefitted from racing Formula Ultra which was raced later in the day. Luck being on his side, however, on the restart of the Open SS race, Mark DeGross and Adam Robarts came together trying to get around race leader Brian Pinkstaff on the opening lap, and both Adam and Mark ended up on the ground. Then another twist of fate came his way when DeGross threw himself down on the ground in Turn One all by himself in 3rd place in the Formula Ultra race.

Oregon EDR Performance racer Andy DiBrino won the Saturday Formula Ultra race chased by Redline’s Adam Robarts, and EDR’s Jacob Rower rounding out the podium. Chromie said he thought he heard DeGross being wheeled into the room next to him at the hospital, this just after he looked at his father and “slipped” his shoulder back in place so he could go race Sunday’s festivities! The Open SS race was be postponed to Sunday after DeGross’ mishap. DeGross was released from the hospital shortly after Sutton was released, sometime Saturday evening.

Come Sunday, everyone was surprised to see both Sutton and DeGross at the riders meeting joking with each other, comparing stories and laughs. It appeared Sunday would be a good ol’ day at the track. Sutton started off prior to lunch by proving his dominance in Formula Ultra. He nailed the start and led every lap of the 6-lap race on Sunday. He looked a little grimaced afterwards but sure held on to that solid smile of his. Ryan took the top spot, followed by Andy DiBrino, and Adam Robarts. Shortly after lunch, 600SB was up and with DiBrino up from OMRRA and the AFM, Sutton had to put on a good effort to keep him at bay, which he did. The flag dropped and DiBrino went from last to second on the grid in 600 SB. Race on!!! After several laps, Sutton kept setting the pace up front and DiBrino crashed out of the lead after just passing Sutton. When the race ended, KFG Racing’s Sutton gladly took his first, with EDR Performance rider DeGross taking a solid 2nd and Speed Dealer Motors Chase Glidden filling the podium out.

Chromie’s run wasn’t over yet though. Open SB was up near the end of the day and he wanted that one to cap off his run. DiBrino and Sutton went at it again, with Sutton coming out on top once again.

DiBrino said after the race “I was right there, [but] I just couldn’t find a way by!”

The Open SB podium read Sutton on top, DiBrino 2nd, with Robarts 3rd. That capped Ryan’s last win of the weekend and certainly a tremendous run for the Championship!

The last race of the day on Sunday was the rescheduled Open SS from Saturday. Ryan cruised to a nice 5th place finish on his GP Suspension ZX-6R, collecting class points and closing out his season and doing rolling burnouts on the cool down lap in celebration of his defense of his overall championship . DeGross pulled the win on the bike his 2Fast Track Days crew spent all day fixing, with Redline’s Robarts in 2nd, and GP Suspension’s Sam Verderico earning a well fought 3rd.

In the hotly conststed Ninja 250 Cup, Derick Clary pulled the top spot with Premium Rush’s Phil Melnyk earning 2nd and Jacob Keiner filling the last spot on the box. The Championship for the Ninja 250 Cub saw Phil Melnyk earn the trophy, Christopher Johnson taking 2nd, and Sean Galt taking a solid 3rd in the class. The 250 Cup has grown in years past, becoming one of the more well attended classes within the club.

The 2014 season was WMRRA’s 40th year racing in the NW and there are many details to be found on the website at www.wmrra.com
