Suzuki Introduces GSX-R125 In Europe

Suzuki has introduced a GSX-R125 for the European market, with a fuel-injected DOHC four-stroke, four-valve single-cylinder engine displacing 125cc from a bore and stroke of 62mm x 41.2mm. The company claims the the bike is the lightest in the horsepower-controlled class it targets, with a better power-to-weight ratio (and a better torque-to-weight ratio) than competing models. It makes the maximum-allowed 11 kw (about 14.8 bhp) at 10,000 rpm and about 14 Nm (about 10.4 lbs.-ft.) of torque at 8,500 rpm.

Intake valves measure 24mm and exhaust valves measure 21mm, and the cylinder bore is plated with Suzuki’s own nickel-phosphorus-silcon-carbide coating, which the company calls Suzuki Composite Electrochemical Material (SCEM).

The throttle body has a 32mm bore and features a single, dual-spray, four-hole injector that aims the spray from two holes directly at the intake valves.The dual-exit exhaust system includes a catalytic converter, and the bike meets tough Euro4 emission standards.

The bike has steel-backbone frame with a wheelbase of 1,300mm (about 51 inches) with a claimed curb weight of 130 kilograms (about 287 pounds), and the seat height is 785mm (about 31 inches).

Suzuki says the bodywork was developed using a wind-tunnel and that the bike has the smallest projected frontal area in its class. Cast, 10-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels come with Dunlop D102 tires and ABS is standard. The single front disc mounts directly on the front wheel hub and measures 290mm (about 11.4 inches).

The bike comes with stacked LED headlights, and Suzuki says the LED units use about 15% of the power needed by conventional halogen bulbs, reducing the amount of engine power used to run the alternator as opposed to turning the rear wheel, in turn improving acceleration and fuel economy. The rear license plate is illuminated by a lightweight LED.

An LCD instrument panel includes a segmented-bar tach across the top, along with a digital speedometer, a gear-position indicator, a digital clock, a digital odometer with dual trip meters, an average fuel consumption meter, a fuel gauge and an indicator for when an oil change is required.

The bike also has a key-less ignition system, and the engine will start as long as the key is within range; an easy-start system fires the engine with one touch of the starter button,which does not need to be held down until the engine starts. A button on the key remote triggers an answer-back function that causes the turn signals to flash, making it easier to find the bike in a parking lot.

The company did not announce any plans to sell the new GSX-R125 in the North American market.
