CALGARY, Alta. For the second year in a row Brantford, Ont.’s Jordan Szoke edged Cochrane, Alta. rider Clint McBain for victory in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship feature at Race City Motorsport Park. In a virtual repeat of their duel in 2006 Szoke took his Canadian Kawasaki Motors Kawasaki ZX-10R to a narrow 0.155 second victory over McBain’s Suzuki Acceleration Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000 in Saturday’s first half of a weekend doubleheader. The result gave Szoke, the defending Parts Canada Superbike champion, a 31-point lead over McBain, 106-75, after two rounds of the seven-race national series. It was also Szoke’s 22nd career national Superbike win, giving him a chance to tie the record of 23 victories currently held by Steve Crevier in Sunday’s back end of the twin bill. “Clint and I have had some good battles,” said Szoke after his seventh career Race City Superbike win. “We’re also good friends, although maybe not after today.” Francis Martin of Sherbrooke, Que. completed the podium aboard the Team Suzuki / Blackfoot / Picotte Performance Suzuki GSX-R1000. McBain took the lead at the start and quickly opened up a gap on the field while Szoke found himself stuck in fifth spot. By the time the Brantford, Ont. rider moved up to second place on lap 6 McBain was already four seconds ahead. But by lap 11 Szoke was on the Suzuki’s tail and finally took the lead on lap 16. McBain got back in front two laps later but at the start of lap 21 Szoke moved in front for good. “Once I got into second I thought there was no way I was going to catch Clint,” Szoke said. “To catch someone and do that is one of the most satisfying feelings you can have. It makes all the hours of work worth it.” McBain blamed himself for not capitalizing on his early advantage. “I couldn’t count the mistakes I made,” he said. “I’m disappointed in myself. I know I had a winning bike. I could blame it on lapped traffic but the traffic wouldn’t have been an issue if not for the mistakes I made.” Fifteen-year-old rookie Brett McCormick of Saskatoon finished fourth on his Canadian Kawasaki Motors Kawasaki ZX-10R after running second early on. Pascal Picotte of St-Cecile Milton, Que. missed the Superbike race after crashing in the Yoshimura Pro 600 Sport Bike event earlier in the day. The two-time national Superbike champion was transported to hospital with suspected shoulder and rib injuries. Szoke also won the Pro 600 Sport Bike race on his Kawasaki ZX-6R, holding off the Z1 Cycletech Yamaha YZF-R6 of Kars, Ont.’s Andrew Nelson and McCormick’s Kawasaki. Israel Johnas of Oak Lake, Man. was victorious in the International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW Amateur 600 Sport Bike race on a Kawasaki ZX-6R. Calgary’s Chad Pasowisty won the Thunder race on a Ducati PS1000LE and Derek Vammus of Orangeville, Ont. was the winner in Suzuki SV650 National Cup.
