Rain follows Luthi also to Portugal
Also in Portugal it was raining on the first practice day. And if that would not have been enough the rain came with heavy thunder and flashes this morning and made the first practice day difficult for Tom Luthi and his Moto2 colleagues in Estoril. Already at the last Grand Prix in Australia Luthi was not able to fully use the first practice day as the conditions there also were difficult. The 24-year-old Swiss now has to hope for better weather tomorrow, so he can have some good laps to improve his time. But if you believe the weather forecast also tomorrow will look similar. Lüthi still believes in a good change and the chance to get a better starting position for the Portuguese Grand Prix, which’s first day he finished in overall 12th position.
Tom Luthi, 12 – 1’54.594 (combined times FP1 and FP2): “This was a special day. This morning it was raining and we did not ride much. It was okay in the rain, but then it started to rain heavier and the water stayed on the track and you could not really ride in these conditions. In the afternoon it was better. At the beginning it was damp, but dried off quickly. I used rain tyres the whole time and destroyed the rear tyre. Other riders went in and changed the tyre to a slick tyre, but there was not much time left and it didn’t make much sense to change it. We will have to see what the weather does tomorrow and work on the settings for the race.”

NO RISKS FOR MARC VDS AT STORM HIT ESTORIL
Scott Redding topped the timesheet, with teammate Hector Faubel fourth, at the conclusion of a very wet first free practice session at Estoril this morning. Both Marc VDS riders opted to take no unnecessary risks in equally difficult conditions this afternoon, with Faubel finishing the second 45-minute practice session in 24th place with Redding one place further back in 25th
Heavy rain driven by high winds greeted the riders as they arrived at the Estoril circuit this morning, with the first free practice session held in fully wet conditions. Redding setting the fastest time halfway through the session, improving with every lap until he crashed without injury after running onto the white line exiting the final turn.
Faubel completed just seven laps during the session, one more than his teammate, but his lap time was enough to secure fourth place on the timesheet, in a session in which only 19 riders recorded a time.
The second free practice started wet, but with the sun finally breaking through the clouds the track continued to dry throughout the 45-minute session. Even when a dry line appeared and the Moto2 riders were able to switch to slick tyres, conditions were difficult with damp patches remaining at key points on the circuit.
Both Faubel and Redding opted not to take any unnecessary risks and settled for 24th and 25th places on the timesheet this afternoon, but confident of improvement tomorrow whatever the conditions.
Hector Faubel #55: 24th – 1’56.082 “The weather was bad this morning, but I had a good feeling with the bike and I was able to lap quite consistently on the wet tyres, eventually finishing the session fourth fastest. This afternoon was more difficult. It started wet, dried very quickly in places, but with damp patches remaining until the end of the session. We switched to slicks quite early; this is the first time I’ve ridden the bike in these mixed conditions, so it was a case of building confidence with every lap. I took three seconds off my time on my final lap, but then we simply ran out of time. I have a good feeling about this track and this weekend and I’m looking forward to tomorrow whatever the weather throws at us.”
Scott Redding #45: 25th – 1’56.174 “The conditions were very wet this morning, but at least they were consistent. I was able to push quite hard on the wets for a good lap time, but then I clipped the white line exiting the final corner right at the end of the session and down I went. I slid for a long time, but at least I managed to amuse the very wet crowd in the grandstand with my Superman impression! This afternoon the track was fairly dry, but the underlying water meant grip was difficult to predict. In the end I decided not to take any chances; there are no points for being the fastest on day one. The bike feels good, so I’m confident we will be up there in practice and qualifying tomorrow. I’d prefer it to be dry, but if it’s wet then that’s not a problem.”
Trevor Morris: Hector Faubel’s Crew Chief “This afternoon was the first time Hector has ridden the bike on slicks in damp conditions, so we took things easy while he built up confidence in the bike. At first it was difficult for him to keep the temperature in the tyres but then, right at the end of the session, he found his confidence and managed to improve his lap time by three seconds. I’m confident we’ll see even further improvements tomorrow, regardless of the weather.”
