By John Cameron LAS VEGAS, NV: After being rained out just two weeks ago in California, the Sidecar Racers Association-West (SRA-West) was greeted by excellent conditions at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s Classic Course. The April 2-3 double-header event saw a runaway victory by defending champions #84 Team Becker Moto Works (William Becker/Eric Becker). Saturday’s race was marred by a crash during the start involving #49 Wood Brothers Racing (Chris Wood/Phil Wood) and #3 Bad Cat Racing (Mike Jones/Brandon Mathews). After the dust settled and the red flags stopped waving, both Wood Brothers and #175 Team RGM (Rick Murray/Arthur Morris) would not make the restart. The 8-lap restart went flawlessly for Becker Moto Works, who led from turn 1 and built out a commanding lead, followed by #187 Team Johnny Killmore (John Wood) who’s passenger, Nathan Urbanovsky, seemed already up to speed after only 10 laps ever on a Formula Sidecar. The pair took an easy 2nd place over #284 Cat On A Leash Racing (Michael Troutman/ Heidi Neidhofer) who put in an amazing race themselves, earning their first podium since forming last year. Sunday’s 6-lap race saw Team Johnny Killmore sneak into the lead from the second row and squirt away for a few turns, but Becker Moto Works was right on their tail before the pair made it to the back straight. Becker seemed to be biding his time, looking for an opening, when Team RGM came out of nowhere from their back-row start and tried to make it 3 wide in turn 7. The trio bunched up into turn 7, with Becker squeaking through an opening just before the ultra-tight turn 9. Team Johnny Killmore went wide and seemed to lose drive (later citing a missed downshift), allowing RGM to push through and follow the new leaders. A battle appeared to shape up for a few laps, but the father/son Becker duo put their heads down and eked out a gap, allowing them to take their second win of the weekend. The championship returns to Willow Springs Raceway April 22-23 at the Moto Classica by AHRMA. The SRA-West wishes a speedy return to Phil Wood- passenger for Wood Brothers Racing- and a quick recovery from rib injuries suffered during Saturday’s race.
