PETER ZYLSTRA TO ATTEND VDMO Peter Zylstra, the chief designer and indeed the “father” of the legendary Harley Davidson XR750 racing motor, will attend Vintage Days Mid-Ohio on July 9-11. He will join Calvin “Buddy” Rayborn III, who will ride the special XR 750 TT raced and developed in the early 1970’s by his late father Cal Rayborn II. Peter immigrated to the USA in the 1960’s from the Netherlands. He spent his career at Harley Davidson Racing. After designing the XR 750 motor in the early 1970’s, he oversaw its development and production during the following 3½ decades until his recent retirement. The XR 750 is arguably the world’s most successful motorcycle racing engine. CAL RAYBORN’S XR 750 TT RIDES AGAIN AT VDMO A legendary ex Cal Rayborn factory Harley Davidson XR 750 TT road racer will return to public view for the first time in more than three decades. The bike won AMA F-750 races at Laguna Seca and Indianapolis Park in the early 1970’s before the 2 strokes took over. Rayborn’s son Cal III will pilot the bike on demonstration laps on Saturday and Sunday. A replica set of Cal’s leather’s were commissioned to fit Cal III. The bike was a 1983 retirement present to Harley Davidson racing Czar Dick O’Brien. It was recently acquired at the Las Vegas Auction by Team Obsolete who prepared the bike with assistance from tuner Carl Patrick. Several ex Harley Davidson factory team technical alumni are expected to attend. Motorcyclist Magazine’s Aaron Frank will cover the reappearance of the Rayborn XR 750TT. BENELLI “FOUR” TO RACE AT VDMO Longtime vintage competitor and former National vintage 500 GP Champion, Stu Carter will race a Team Obsolete Benelli four from the 1960’s. The screaming DOHC, 16 valve, 7 speed 350cc machine has been prepared for this event after being silently on display in New York for many years. The four open megaphone exhausts can be heard around the entire circuit! Team Obsolete is sponsored by AVON TYRES, VANSON LEATHERS, WORKS PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS, AND AIRTECH STREAMLINING.
