Team Thornton/Wagnon and the Village Idiots Win Big at MSR Houston with CMRA

The Heavyweight team of Eddie Thornton/Derek Wagnon, brought home the win in the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) Round Four Team 60 race, while the Village Idiots team of Brandon Cleland, Chris Headley, John Orchard, and Garet Tomlinson grabbed the win in C Superbike and the overall win for Championship Endurance Round Six this past Saturday, September 20.

CMRA held its ninth round of the season on Saturday with a 4-Hour Championship Endurance, Mini & Lightweight Sprints, and the final round of the Solo 30 and Team 60 races, bringing over 10 hours of racing action to MSR Houston in Angleton, Texas. The weather was sunny and very humid, with temperatures in the 90’s, but lap times were still fast on the 2.38-mile course.

The Mini and Lightweight Sprint grids ran first, kicking off Saturday’s action, with Formula 4 and E Superstock having 18 entries each. The new 481Motos-sponsored Grom Challenge class continued to grow with 12 grid entries as well.

The 4-Hour Championship Endurance had a combined grid of 17 teams with the classes A Superbike, C Superbike, Formula 2, and Modern Classic Endurance represented.

The lights went out and the Village Idiots, aboard a Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZF-R6 were off to the early lead, with the Pirelli-shod, Suzuki GSX-R1000 mounted, I Like Big Gas!! team of Scott Buckley, Craig Montgomery, and Brandon Young hot on their heels in second. These two teams held off all comers for the next 4 hours, with I Like Big Gas turning the fastest lap of the race on lap 64, turning a 1:37.783. The Village Idiots ran a 1:38.623, but held onto their lead. The LocoMotion team of Alonzo Contreras, Ryan Max Johnson, Matt Vastine, and Mark Windham, aboard a Yamaha YZF-R6, wrestled the Excel EMR and Lone Star Track Day teams for third and won, holding it down for the final three hours of the race. When the checkers dropped at 4:30 pm, the Village Idiots took both the overall win first in C Superbike, I Like Big Gas!! crossed the line in second overall and first in A Superbike, and LocoMotion finished third overall and second in C Superbike.

Team 60 was the final race of the day. The 60-minute timed race consisted of two rider teams, competing on their own bike, riding 20-35 minutes each and making a mandatory transponder swap pit stop under “dead engine” conditions, with the classes of Heavyweight, Middleweight, and Lightweight. Thirty teams gridded up to do a Le Mans-style start. When the lights went out, the first leg riders sprinted from the infield across the track to their motorcycles being held by a crew member. As the riders started the motorcycles and pulled into the race line the crowd was on their feet cheering the amazingly clean rolling start.

The racing was close, with the BMW S1000RR and Kawasaki ZX-10R mounted heavyweight team of Eddie Thornton/Derek Wagnon battling for the lead with the Yamaha YZF-R6 mounted middleweight team of James Camacho Jr/Brandon Cleland. Both riders for the teams went back and forth, each team putting down a fastest lap of 1:34 and change. But the Thornton/Wagnon team edged ahead, and widened their lead, taking the overall win by 46 seconds over the Camacho Jr/Cleland team. The Kawasaki ZX636 and Yamaha YZF-R6 team of Andy Galindo/Eric Williams crossed the line for third overall.
