AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike There are 21 AMA Pro National Guard SuperBikes representing six manufacturers entered for this weekend’s doubleheader, led in the point standings by two-time defending Champ Josh Hayes (No. 1 Monster Energy Graves Yamaha YZF-R1) and hard-charging Blake Young (No. 79 Yoshimura Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000). Hayes is the only entered rider with an AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike win to his credit at Infineon Raceway and his riding prowess at the track makes him a solid prospect for success this weekend. His breakthrough National Guard SuperBike win came here in 2009 over Mat Mladin, and he has taken victory by at least three seconds in four of the last six National Guard SuperBike races here. Hayes has also turned in consistent fast qualifying times in Sonoma to capture two consecutive pole positions; his qualifying lap in 2011 was 1:35.717, just .006 seconds off of his 2010 pole time of 1:35.711. His strategy during both of his championship-winning seasons involved grabbing the all-important bonus points for fastest qualifier and lap leader as often as possible, and he is on a similar track this season. Although the 2012 National Guard SuperBike wins are split 2-2 between Hayes and Young, the Mississippian has grabbed every available bonus point and leads the Wisconsin-native 116-110 in the point standings heading into this weekend’s doubleheader. Despite Hayes’ strength in Sonoma, success isn’t guaranteed. Young’s dramatic and inspirational victory in Race 1 at Road Atlanta last month served as a notice that his championship aspirations are as strong as ever and that he has the mettle to clinch victories against the odds. Young’s late-race talents are remarkable, as is his ability to overcome issues throughout the weekend leading up to the race and then turn it on and find the winning pace when it matters the most. If Young wins, it will likely be a battle to the end; of his 12 National Guard SuperBike victories, only one has been taken by more than a second. Suzuki is the outright leader in National Guard SuperBike wins at Infineon with 19, including the win of Young’s former teammate Tommy Hayden over Hayes in Race 2 last year. This season, Young is joined by Chris Clark (No. 6 Yoshimura Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000) and the young talent has already shown speed, posting lap times within a second of his veteran teammate during a test at Homestead-Miami Speedway in March. The latest addition to the National Guard SuperBike division is Hayes’ teammate on the Monster Energy Graves Yamaha squad, Josh Herrin (No. 2 Monster Energy Graves Yamaha YZF-R1). Herrin has enjoyed a relatively speedy transition to the class and the more powerful 1000cc Yamaha flagship, grabbing hole shots and taking home a set of podiums in just his second event weekend. The rising star has been strong here, earning a podium finish in each of the three years that he competed in AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike with a best result of second place in the 2010 running. Roger Hayden (No. 54 National Guard Jordan Suzuki GSX-R1000) has taken two thirds and two fourths in 2012 and will almost certainly be challenging for race wins this season, if not this weekend. The Kentucky-native was riding as hard as any National Guard SuperBike rider at Road Atlanta two weeks ago, and is just missing that tenth or two required to become the new fixture in a 2012 version of last year’s Hayes/Young/Hayden trio. Hayden’s teammate on the Michael Jordan Motorsports roster, Ben Bostrom (No. 23 Jordan Suzuki GSX-R1000), has had an uncharacteristic and frustrating start to the season and will look to this event to bolster his 2012 effort. Born in Redding, Calif. and now residing in Malibu, Bostrom performs well at this second-home track, posting two runner-up results in National Guard SuperBike in 2010 and taking the AMA Pro SuperSport race win during the 2008 season. Larry Pegram (No. 72 Foremost Insurance/Pegram Racing BMW S1000RR) currently sits fifth in the standings on the strength of three top-five finishes. The Ohio native would likely have been higher except for a slight miscue in Race 1 at Road Atlanta that left him with a 12th place result. Pegram has had a number of intense battles recently with Steve Rapp (No. 15 Motorcycle-Superstore.com/Big Kahuna/LeoVince Attack Kawasaki ZX-10), who sits just one point back. The riding style of Chris Fillmore (No. 16 KTM/HMC Racing KTM RC8R) lends itself to natural road courses and his recent six- and seventh-place finishes at Road Atlanta are a testament to that fact. Stefan Nebel (No. 12 KTM/HMC Racing KTM RC8R) joins Fillmore this weekend on the KTM/HMC Racing team in his debut AMA Pro Road Racing event. The German standout is a 2-time IDM Superbike Champion and former IDM Superstock Champion and will compete in six rounds this season. Fillmore’s 2011 AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series win and trio of top 10 GoPro Daytona SportBike performances at Infineon combined with the fact that Nebel has been with the KTM brand since the beginning of the KTM 1190 RC8 Superbike project are positive indicators for the Austrian manufacturer. Robertino Pietri (No. 3 Team Venezuela Suzuki GSX-R1000) has had a consistent return to AMA Pro Road Racing and enters this weekend ninth in the points. The Venezuelan posted a front-row qualifying effort in AMA Superstock during the 2007 event at Infineon and has made steady improvements since coming on board with his new team in March. Representing the newest marque in the field, Geoff May (No. 99 AMSOIL Hero Moto EBR 1190RS) is joined on the Erik Buell Racing squad for the 2012 season by two-time AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike Champion Danny Eslick (No. 69 Hero Moto EBR 1190RS). Still a relatively new team/manufacturer/bike, May made it look pure class at Road Atlanta; only a Sunday mechanical mishap could prevent him from taking a pair of top fives. Eslick’s consistent top 10 results will likely be bettered round after round as he acclimates himself to the larger machine after spending the last two seasons piloting a Suzuki GSX-R600. The EBR 1190RS is the second-most populous brand in the field. The brand’s third entry is privateer Shawn Higbee (No. 19 CrotchRocket.tv/Higbee-Racing EBR 1190RS), who has mounted a grassroots effort with backing from Rob Weaver and CrotchRocket.tv. Series points leader Martin Cardenas (No. 36 GEICO Suzuki GSX-R600) is a likely front-runner. The 2010 Champion competed in AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike last season and has returned to AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike stronger than ever. During his 2009 and 2010 seasons in AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike, Cardenas won 16 times but only locked up one pole position; this year he has taken two poles and as many wins with just three races in the books. The Colombian, who has won half of the GoPro Daytona SportBike races contested at Infineon Raceway, now leads the points by 20 markers and will look to widen that gap to strengthen his hopes for a championship repeat. In last year’s contest, Jason DiSalvo (No. 40 Team Latus Motors Racing Triumph Daytona 675) took pole position and then led a confident march to victory, finishing at least four seconds ahead of the field in both race finals. The New Yorker had an impressive run at the 2012 season-opening DAYTONA® 200 and although he suffered mechanical woes in Round 2 at Road Atlanta, his determination and the strength of his team make him a sure bet for a top finish this weekend at Infineon. One of the most impressive rising stars in GoPro Daytona SportBike, Dane Westby (No. 5 M4 Suzuki GSX-R600) earned his maiden AMA Pro victory last season at Mid-Ohio and is poised to take home another one very soon. Westby, whose top result at Infineon is a third-place finish earned during the 2010 season, finished fifth after leading seven laps of this year’s DAYTONA 200 and took home second- and third-place results at Road Atlanta to lock in second position in the point standings. The Y.E.S. Graves Motorsports team was plagued by early-season injuries to its young talent and enlisted the support of AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike veteran Tommy Hayden (No. 8 Y.E.S. Graves Yamaha YZF-R6) as a substitute for Garrett Gerloff. Even though he hadn’t competed on a 600cc machine in several seasons, the multi-class AMA Pro Champion found success immediately in the highly-competitive class, taking home third- and second-place results at Road Atlanta after race-long battles with Westby. Hayden’s last outing at Infineon Raceway resulted in a National Guard SuperBike Race 2 win over Josh Hayes. This weekend marks the return of Cameron Beaubier (No. 6 Y.E.S. Graves Motorsports Yamaha YZF-R6). Beaubier, who took home the final spot on the podium at the DAYTONA 200 in March before suffering a knee injury, is healthy and ready to be back. At Infineon Raceway in 2010, he led Huntley Nash (No. 75 LTD Racing Yamaha YZF-R6) to the line for his second career victory during the last season the two competed in AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport. Joey Pascarella (No. 52 SGA Racing/Yamaha Champions Riding School Yamaha YZF-R6) became the 71st winner of the DAYTONA® 200 after an incredible performance at Daytona International Speedway in March. The 2010 AMA Pro SuperSport West Division Champion was nearly without a ride for the remainder of the season until a last-minute collaboration came together between The Jon Block Group and SGA/Katra Racing – Yamaha Champions Riding School. The local star, who hails from Vacaville, Calif., posted a pair of top 10 finishes at Road Atlanta two weeks ago and heads to his home track fourth in the point standings. Jake Zemke (No. 98 Ducshop Racing Ducati 848) has two AMA Formula Xtreme wins to his credit at Infineon Raceway (2005, 2008), along with several podium finishes in National Guard SuperBike and AMA Superstock. The Californian has found his pace after just two rounds with his new team, turning in a sixth place finish at Daytona and two fourth place results at Road Atlanta. Another rider that has posted solid results with a new team, local rider Bobby Fong (No. 50 Meen Motorsports Racing Yamaha YZF-R6) is now sixth in the point standings after two sixth place finishes at Road Atlanta. Fong, who lives in nearby Stockton, Calif., considers this his home track and will have a large number of family and friends in attendance. J.D. Beach (No. 95 RoadRace Factory/Red Bull Yamaha YZF-R6) and teammate Jake Gagne (No. 132 RoadRace Factory/Red Bull Yamaha YZF-R6), sit in seventh and ninth positions in the standings, respectively. The two rising stars, both of which have Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup Championships to their credit, are settling in with their upstart team. With two AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series races completed in the 2012 season, three dominant riders have taken each of the podium spots in hotly-contested and highly-competitive battles. Tyler O’Hara (No. 29 Bartel’s Harley-Davidson Harley-Davidson XR1200) has made it known that he is a force to be reckoned with. He backed up his breakthrough victory in AMA Pro Road Racing’s inaugural event at Indianapolis Motor Speedway last year with a solid performance in this year’s season-opener at Daytona International Speedway and an impressive point sweep at Road Atlanta. The 25-year-old, who hails from Petaluma, Calif., took his first AMA Pro Road Racing pole position, led the most laps and grabbed the race victory in Braselton, Ga., taking the points lead in the process. O’Hara’s last race at Infineon resulted in a fourth-place finish. Defending Vance & Hines XR1200 Series Champion Kyle Wyman (No. 33 KWR/ Vesrah/ Kuryakyn Harley-Davidson XR1200) took an early lead with another impressive victory at Daytona International Speedway in March. Despite a Road Atlanta crash in the AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike division that resulted in a broken heel, the New Yorker persevered and gridded up for the Vance & Hines XR1200 Series final. Heading into Turn 10a at Road Atlanta on the sighting lap, Wyman’s Harley-Davidson hit fluid dropped by another competitor which sent him crashing to the ground yet again. Unable to continue on his primary machine, he switched to a back-up bike and started the 10-lap race from the back of the field. In a dedicated march reminiscent of Blake Young’s dramatic come-back in AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike Race 1 at Road Atlanta the day before, Wyman picked off competitors lap after lap to finish third and maintain second in the point standings. O’Hara’s teammate is longtime AMA Pro veteran Michael Barnes (No. 34 Bartel’s Harley-Davidson Harley-Davidson XR1200), who currently sits third in the standings with a season-best finish of second at Road Atlanta. More, from a press release issued by Celtic Racing/Orient Express: Celtic Racing Arrives At Infineon With Rispoli Leading AMA SuperSport West Series Barely two weeks have elapsed since Celtic Racing’s James Rispoli and Corey Alexander completed the second round of the 2012 AMA Pro Road Racing SuperSport season at Road Atlanta. James Rispoli rode his #1 Celtic Orient Express Racing Suzuki GSX-R 600 hard from the opening day, dominating practice and qualifying on pole ahead of a 40 rider field. James would go on to win the SuperSport race on Saturday, and narrowly miss victory in race two on Sunday after a red flag cut short a relentless battle between Jake Lewis and himself. Corey Alexander rode hard and qualified in fifth position, but was balked at the start of Saturday’s race and battled traffic to finish tenth. Sunday saw Alexander hit the pavement early in the race when he got tangled up with another rider. Corey suffered some shoulder injuries in the accident, and has undergone several examinations and an MRI. Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California is another challenging road course, featuring over 160 feet of elevation changes, and flowing camber variations that make it a challenge for every rider except die hard locals. At 2.22 miles in length, it is among the shorter tracks the racers will visit this season. Infineon rewards careful chassis set up, and with 11 turns, rhythm is important for a fast lap. James Rispoli arrives at Infineon leading the AMA SuperSport West Championship after winning race one and finishing fourth in race two at Daytona, where points counted towards the West Championship. Rispoli has been training and preparing since the day after Road Atlanta, and carries a great deal of excitement with him to California. “I am really excited as we head to the West Coast! When I went there to ride it last, it was super cold at Infineon, but I got some really good marks and reference points. I have been training in the heat now so I feel really good, and I’m getting used to the heat so I can do a better job controlling my breathing. We are looking to keep the momentum going as we did at Road Atlanta, and we are trying to get as many points as possible this weekend. I hope my teammate Corey is going to be able to ride, he was very fast here last year, and any help he can provide with data would help a lot” said Rispoli. (May 3) — Fresh off back-to-back victories at Road Atlanta that propelled him into the AMA Pro Daytona SportBike points lead, GEICO Suzuki GSX-R600 rider Martin Cardenas is hoping for another successful outing at this weekend’s Great Clips West Coast Moto Jam at Infineon Raceway. Like Road Atlanta, this event also offers two chances to win, a fact not lost of the 29-year-old Cardenas, who hails from Medellin, Colombia. “This is always the goal — to win,” said Cardenas, whose 18 Daytona SportBike all-time victories leads the class. “I like this track very much and I think it suits my riding and this new bike very well. I think the 2012 model is better than previous years, and is easier to carry into turns. This is a technical course so that will be important.” Cardenas has started all three races this season from the pole position. While he likes the view from P1, he says earning any front-row position that offers clear track ahead is the team’s first goal. “You must be very focused at Infineon Raceway because there are lots of uphill and downhill areas and aggressive turns without many straightaways so your mind is very active setting up the next maneuver,” Cardenas said. “The less distractions you can have, it’s better, so having a clear track in front of me would be great.” The Daytona SportBike class gets its first look at Infineon Raceway’s 2.32-mile, 11-turn road course layout Friday with a 1 p.m. practice session. They’ll return later in the day at 4 p.m. for the first round of qualifying. Conditions will likely be very different in Q2, which is slated for 9:20 a.m., Saturday, when the bay fog will likely be enveloping the track. Then comes the first race at 2 p.m. with television coverage provided by SPEED. A quick warm-up at 9:30 a.m. begins Sunday’s action with Race 2 slated to begin at 2:15 p.m. Once again, SPEED will air the action. “If the weather is nice, it should be another great weekend,” Cardenas said. “The fans in this area are very committed to supporting motorcycle races and if it’s sunny there are hundreds of riders coming to the races, which is fun to see. I hope to give them a good show for GEICO, Lucas Oil, Suzuki and Team Hammer.”
