The proposed New Jersey Motorsports Park (NJMP) project in Millville, New Jersey is continuing to move through its lengthy approval process, according to recent press releases issued by the track. Thanks to cooperation between developers Lee Brahin and Harvey Siegel (co-owner of Virginia International Raceway), the City of Millville, Cumberland County, the State of New Jersey and community leaders, the three-phase, five-year, $100-million development of a 707-acre lot next to the Millville Municipal Airport is expected to receive final approval this fall. And construction of the first phase is expected to begin in early-2006 and end in early-2007. The first phase will include the centerpiece of the project, the 4.1-mile Thunderbolt Raceway (named for the P-47 World War II fighter plane that was based at the Millville Army Airfield, now the Municipal Airport), which can be divided into four different configurations, two of which can be run separately and simultaneously. The track is expected to host sanctioned National motorcycle race events, based on the facts that Siegel’s VIR has hosted AMA, Formula USA and WERA National events for the last several years and NJMP’s proposed zoning will allow for six to eight “major events” drawing over 10,000 spectators each year. The first phase will also include: a country club clubhouse, garages, VIP suites and track infrastructure buildings. When fully completed, NJMP is expected to include: a go-kart track, a skidpad/vehicle dynamics testing area, a ¾-mile paved tri-oval, an off-road vehicle track, a classic car gallery, in-house driving schools, restaurants, motels, at least one hotel with a conference center, a motorsports industrial complex, television/media studios and possibly a car/motorcycle dealership. Members of VIR will have membership privileges at NJMP, according to www.njmotorsportspark.com.
