World Superbike will be making its only U.S. appearance at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca September 27-29, 2013. With the recent retirement of the 2012 World Champion Max Biaggi, fan favorites such as Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Motorsport), Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team), Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) and former World Superbike Champion Carlos Checa (Althea Racing) will now be the leaders to battle among themselves for the 2013 title. “We have been extremely pleased about bringing this competitive, world-class racing back to Mazda Raceway next year,” says Gill Campbell, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca CEO/general manager. “But, now with the departure of Biaggi, I think we will see even fiercer on track battles as each of the riders feels he has a shot at the title, which could ultimately be decided in Monterey as we are round 13 of 15 of the championship.” In 2013 World Superbike will compete in 11 countries with 15 races, fielding a typical grid of two dozen skilled international riders on six competitive manufacturer brands. Each round has two races and the results of each race are combined to determine two annual World Championships, one for riders and one for manufacturers.
