“Dunlop, the official control tire supplier for all classes in the MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North American Road Racing series, introduced a new rear Superbike slick mid-season in 2018. Dunlop made the tire available to some teams during independent pre-season testing and to all teams during the official MotoAmerica pre-season test at Barber Motorsports Park in March.
“But even with those previews and the fact that was clearly an improved product, the new Dunlop was so much larger than its predecessor that it forced teams to re-invent their chassis set-ups mid-season. Some teams, like the factory Yamaha squad, adapted quickly. Many other top teams, including Yoshimura Suzuki, struggled to get their riders comfortable with the larger rear tire.
“To avoid that from happening again in 2019, Dunlop, working closely together with MotoAmerica, decided to revise its development schedule and hold its first pre-season test at Barber Motorsports Park two days after the completion of the 2018 season. That way, any new tires developed this winter should be available from the first event of the 2019 season … and no new tires will be introduced mid-season …”
