Saturday morning’s AMA Pro American Superbike Final Qualifying session at Mid-Ohio was led by Tommy Hayden, who turned a lap of 1:26.435 on his Rockstar Makita Suzuki GSX-R1000 K9. Hayden’s lap time was significantly slower than the 1:25.054 he turned in Friday morning practice, but that is a result of Friday afternoon’s rain washing away the rubber and grip from Mid-Ohio’s racing surface. Yamaha’s Josh Hayes, who earned his first-ever AMA American Superbike pole position during Superpole on Friday, continued his strong run with the second-fastest time, a 1:26.545, on his factory YZF-R1. Privateer David Anthony was third on the timing screen with a 1:26.613 with just over two minutes remaining in the session when he crashed his Aussie Dave Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000 K8 coming out of the Carousel, causing a red flag. Anthony was seen sitting up at the scene, but he was taken away in an ambulance with a possible injury to his right leg. Hayden’s teammate Mat Mladin continued to work on the chassis set-up of his 2009-model GSX-R1000 and was eighth in the session with a 1:28.992. The top 10 grid positions in American Superbike were locked in by Superpole. Saturday morning’s Final Qualifying session decided who would get grid positions 11 and higher.
