Top AMA Superbike Riders: No Changes Equals No Racing In The Rain At Mid-Ohio

During the AMA Superbike event at Road America a press release was issued by AMA Pro Racing that read, in part: “Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio has completed updates to its motorcycle racing road course facility, as requested by AMA Pro Racing. With these track improvements, Mid-Ohio is now approved for AMA National road race competition during wet weather conditions. Earlier in 2008, Mid-Ohio was listed as a venue that would not include competition in wet conditions. This upgrade in track safety and configuration at Mid-Ohio was necessary to ensure the future of the event on the AMA Superbike Schedule.” But some riders who tested at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course Wednesday reported that no changes have been made to the course that would allow racing in the rain and that they will not race if it rains during the series’ August 1-3 event at Mid-Ohio. “No. I haven’t seen no changes to the racetrack,” six-time AMA Superbike Champion Mat Mladin told Roadracingworld.com Wednesday afternoon. “There’s at least half a dozen areas on this racetrack that are sketchy in the dry, let alone in the rain, so the unfortunate fact of the matter is nothing’s changed.” Asked at Road America if he would race in the rain at Mid-Ohio, Mladin flatly said, “I will not be racing in the rain at Mid-Ohio.” “I never spoke to any of the other riders,” Wednesday at Mid-Ohio, continued Mladin. “But there’s obviously a bit of word going around that nobody likes it, etc., etc. But you always see when it comes to the crunch who is of their word, and so far in my experience over here when it comes to the crunch there are very few riders in this paddock that stand by their big talk. There seems to be a lot of big talkers and small walkers, but we’ll see. Maybe it’ll be different. We’ll see what happens. “Ben [Spies] knows my position, and I know his position. If the other guys want to ride that’s up to them. Nothing’s changed on the racetrack, so how the supplemental regulations a week ago can read ‘No Rain Race’ and then all of a sudden everything’s been changed, everything’s fine, I’m not too sure.” “There haven’t been no changes,” to the track, two-time and defending AMA Superbike Champion Ben Spies told Roadracingworld.com Wednesday afteroon, “and none of the factory guys are racing in the rain. We were talking before the day started and everyone went out. “Everyone was asking about all of these awesome changes that supposedly happened when DMG [Daytona Motorsports Group, the prospective new owners of AMA Pro Racing] said we’re going to be racing in the rain. The fact is nothing has been changed. So nobody is racing in the rain, and they [DMG/AMA Pro Racing] weren’t telling the truth.” The only official with either AMA Pro Racing, DMG or Mid-Ohio present at the test Wednesday, according to Mladin and Spies, was DMG’s Roy Janson. Attempts to reach DMG’s Colin Fraser and Bill Syfan were unsuccessful at post-time. An attempt to reach Becky Ackford, Media & Communications Coordinator for TrueSports, Inc, the owners/operators of Mid-Ohio, was not successful Wednesday afternoon. AMA teams will conclude testing at Mid-Ohio on Thursday.
