Jeremy Toye patiently parried Jeffrey Tigert’s stabs at the lead, powered past when it mattered and won his second Willow Springs Motorcycle Club Toyota Gold Cup Unlimited Formula 1 race of the season. Toye took home a $3000 check for winning the race, the last of the 20-lap, $10,000-purse Formula 1 races for Willow Springs Motorcycle Club. Citing the economic environment, WSMC officials announced that cash payouts for the F1 race have been slashed, and the race will revert to its previous 12-lap format. But Toye and Tigert, the only two racers to win a WSMC Formula 1 race this season, made the last 20-lap race a real show, crossing the finish line just a few bikelengths apart lap after lap in the heat and gusting winds of Southern California’s high desert on Sunday afternoon. Defending overall WSMC Champion Karl Lowry took the lead from the start and led the first lap, but Toye and Tigert quickly came past him. For the next 17 laps, Toye and his yellow Lee’s Cycle-developed, Dunlop-shod Honda CBR1000RR led Tigert’s red American Honda-backed, Dunlop-shod Honda CBR1000RR across the line, but it was usually a matter of feet. Tigert could sometimes pass in the hard-braking areas, but Toye had the horsepower to outrun Tigert down the back straight and the skill to keep the beast on the track in the fast Turn Eight. With about two laps to go, Tigert knew the game was over, and he nursed it home, 4.094 seconds back, but well ahead of AMA Superbike series regular David Anthony, who showed up on his Team Aussie Dave Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000. “We had a horsepower advantage, but that kind of gave us a traction disadvantage,” Toye said. “But after the Dunlop rear tire got hot, it was consistent to the end.” “I’m really proud of the way I rode today. But we all knew what Jeremy had brought today, and “I brought a knife to a gun fight,” Tigert said. Tigert took the win in Open Modified Production, while Lowry won the 650cc Superbike and 600cc Superstock contests.
