Jeremy Toye and Jeff Tigert have waged a two-man duel on their Honda CBR1000RRs for months in Willow Springs Motorcycle Club Formula One competition, and in the heat of July, Toye once again took the top spot in the headline WSMC race.
After Tigert opened the season with four straight wins, Toye took the offensive, winning the last two of the 20-lap Toyota Gold Cup Formula One races and leading every lap of this weekend’s race.
But it was close at the end, with Tigert racing out of the back of a pickup truck and with a badly mangled hand and his American Honda-backed, Dunlop-shod Honda CBR1000RR only 0.036 seconds back from Toye’s Lee’s Cycles-backed, Dunlop-shod Honda CBR1000RR.
In brutal heat that forced race officials to shorten the sprint races from eight laps to six and to run all four Solo 20-lap endurance race classes at once on Saturday afternoon, a couple of high-profile racers made their presence known at Willow Springs.
David Kennedy, guitarist of the gold record band Angels & Airwaves, showed up with his Kawasaki ZX-10R and won his first-ever road race, the Novice Heavyweight contest.
And Elena Myers, racing for the first time on the big track at Willow Springs, put her Kawasaki ZX-6R on the podium in 650cc Superbike competition, following only Toye and former overall WSMC Champion Brant Wiwi.
