On two consecutive days, West started from the second row and diced it up with America’s best 600 riders, often in 8-plus rider freight trains. Using dramatic passes while slowing from top speed, West was able to carve his way up to the lead both days. As the laps wound down in Sunday’s final, West was at the back of the lead group in 7th position, as they raced down the hill at top speed to turn 10A. According to West, “All of the other riders were lining up to the left as we were coming down the hill. I decided to stay wide. I was looking for an opening, and it just happened that the only one available was in the lead!” Then came the “Miracle Pass” as he sailed past the entire pack of 6 riders in front of him to take the lead by the time the bikes reached 10A. West credits his team for preparing a bike that let him put it where he wanted it to go.
