History
Tungum Alloy was originally produced for decorative purposes, because when it is polished it looks like gold! Tungum has a rich engineering history dating back to the 1930s. Leading up to the start of the Second World War Tungum tubing was developed for pneumatic and hydraulic applications for – RAF aircraft Spitfire, Hurricane, Lancaster and Wellington bombers. Plus, Naval frigates, tanks and personnel carriers.
When drawn into tube with thin wall thicknesses it held the pressure required. This allowed significant weight savings to be made over the available materials at the time. This was the origin of the Tungum Alloy Co Ltd in 1933.
There have been some interesting and prestigious applications along the way of Tungum Alloy Tubing’s development. Such things as the hydraulic pipework for raising and lowering Tower Bridge, the hydraulic systems on the Hurricane and Spitfire aircraft, Hyperbaric systems, right through to luxury items such as dive watches from Drass and H2O
Applications
Tungum Alloy Tubing has been used in a multitude of applications across numerous industries for over 80 years. Three of the major sectors where Tungum Tubing is widely used are oil & gas, defence, and in hyperbaric chambers.
Tungum Alloy Tubing has been in use offshore since the mid 1970s for non-process applications. It is used extensively for oxygen lines due to its inherent non-sparking characteristics.
Hyperbaric chambers
Tungum Alloy Tubing is ideal for use in hyperbaric chambers. Its non-sparking feature is a must when in contact with oxygen. It is also exhibits excellent antimicrobial characteristics as it contains >81% copper.
Ian Johnstone, MD Tungum LTD:- “We are extremely excited to be involved with Brent and the GR Motosport team for the 2016 & 2017 seasons. We see real tangible benefits in sponsoring such an organisation. Not only because of the association with BSB but also the worldwide exposure that this amazing sport brings. We look forward to working with the team and wish them the very best in 2016.
Brent Gladwin: – “It is fantastic to welcome a new sponsor like TUNGUM. I was introduced to Ian Johnstone by John Morris on the Stauff UK, Offshore Europe stand, and my excitement about Tungum joining the team is hard to contain. The fact that Tungum alloy has been used in so many ways throughout history in innovation and safety is something that they are proud of. Its uses across some iconic moments like in the Battle of Britain in the Spitfire, and then continuing today in to one of my favourite things ‘watches’ and of course something our sport uses Hyperbaric Chambers is brilliant. Tungum has decided to place the bulk of their support into the younger end of our team helping with the Stauff Connect academy which is the heart of our future racing program.
Please visit the TUNGUM web site you will be suprised at its uses.
