(Tooele, UT) Salt Lake City local and World Supersport wildcard Oleg Pianykh knocked out the best lap times of his career and led flag-to-flag in the premier King of the Mountain GTU race to beat points leader Shane Turpin by 18 seconds. While getting used to a new bike, Pianykh set the fastest lap of 1:32.6 on Miller’s West Course in qualifying only to fall on the next lap. “I fell in qualifying but luckily got in some 1:32s first. My first day on the bike I didn’t do very well, but we made some changes and things came together,” said Pianykh. “I’d like to thank Apex Track Days, Fastline Race Tire, Corporate Suspension and Beehive Bail Bonds.” Pianykh also won the Heavyweight Superstock race but could never reel-in Southern California’s Jimmy Wood in Middleweight Superbike, with Wood holding a small lead for the win by three seconds. Wood and Washington’s Mike Sullivan fought for Kawasaki money for some of the closest racing all weekend. In Open Superstock, Wood came from eighth on the grid with Sullivan in fifth to pull each other through traffic and battle for the win. Wood nipped Sullivan at the line by .21 seconds to take home the $2k purse. Local ace Shane Turpin still had another stellar weekend even with the loss to Pianykh, with wins in SuperTwins, Open Superbike, Twins GTU, Formula 40 and the premier King of the Mountain GTO class running near record pace lap after lap. Canada’s Mike Zottmann started reeling in Turpin mid-race knocking out some near-record 1:30.3 laps, but when Turpin got signals from the pitwall he shaved off a few tenths of a second to lap in an impressive 1:30.1 and hold his lead for the win. “This GTO win goes out to my sponsor Brian Kitts who is in the hospital this weekend. Get well fast, Brian. I’d like to thank Brian, Salt Lake Motorsport, Michelin and Fastline Race Tire, Fox, Oakley and Redline Oils,” said Turpin. The seven-race Plaza Cycle Masters of the Mountains series, developed by Miller Motorsports Park, organized by the Utah Sportbike Association (USBA) and sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), was created to encourage and develop fun and competitive road racing at the club and regional levels. In its forth year, the series has quickly turned into a premier event drawing top-level talent from around the nation.
