Robert Buroker, 1:51.851 More, from a press release issued by Geiger Media: KLR Group rider Wyman earns No. 2 starting slot at Road Atlanta BRASELTON, Ga. (April 21) — A deep bruise in his right heel of points leader Kyle Wyman probably kept the popular rider from putting his KLR Group Harley-Davidson on the pole for Sunday’s AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 race at the Triumph Big Kahuna Nationals. Pulling double duty at this event, Wyman got crossed up on his other bike — a Triumph Daytona SportBike — during Saturday’s qualifying action when his rear wheel began to slide out from under him near Turn 5 of the Road Atlanta course. As he tried to correct the movement of his machine he was pitched over the handlebars and flew approximately 20 feet in the air before landing hard on his heel. “It hurts, for sure,” Wyman said. “The longer I was on the KLR Group Harley in that qualifying session the more it hurt so after posting a 1:39.811 we decided to cut it short. We were hopeful that number would keep us on the front row and it did. We’re P2, so we’ll have clear track in front of us tomorrow and should be able to get a great start.” Wyman has been the class of the XR1200 category this year, taking the pole in Daytona and winning the first race of the season with a dramatic pass just before the start/finish line at the famous superspeedway. He was easily the quickest of Saturday’s early practice session here but that was before the pain of the accident started affecting him. After consulting with track physicians, he decided to continue racing, although he smartly elected not to get back on the Triumph. “We haven’t had the time to adequately test that bike,” Wyman said. “There’s some things happening we need to correct. The bike will be very fast; I just need some more time to get it right. I’m still very honored that Triumph asked me to ride it and we’ll do the best we can next time out. “The bottom line is we have a brand new title sponsor for our Harley — KLR Group — and they just joined us before this race so my primary obligation is to them. We’re running for the championship in the Harley class so we need to focus all of our attention on it for the rest of the weekend.” After his duties with the media, Wyman was headed in for physical therapy and a massage to further prepare for Sunday’s race, which begins at 12:30 p.m. “I’m stiffening up in my back and neck and they want to see what they can do with my heel,” Wyman said. “For the most part I just need to tough it out. We have a warm-up at 8 a.m. and I should have a real good grasp then of how it’s going to feel. No matter what, when the race starts all of that will be out of my head. We’re going for the win and we have the bike to get it done.”
