Former 500cc Motocross World Champion and long-time AMA Director Jeff Smith resigned from the AMA Board of Directors and his position as Assistant Treasurer of the Board of Directors February 15. Smith’s resignation came the day before AMA announced that it was in the midst of a forensic review of “unsubstantiated expense reimbursements” to former AMA Board Chairman Dal Smilie and that the results of that review would be reported to “appropriate law enforcement authorities.” Smilie resigned late last year when he learned that the AMA was investigating his record of expense reimbursement requests. Smilie’s expense reimbursement requests were signed by Smith, before they were submitted to AMA staff for payment. Smith has now resigned his position as Treasurer for vintage racing organization AHRMA, according to a posting on www.ahrma.org (~http://www.ahrma.org/whatsnew.htm~) Smith previously served as AHRMA’s Executive Director for several years and was a key player in a lawsuit filed by AHRMA founder and Team Obsolete owner Rob Iannucci against the organization. Fighting that lawsuit led to AHRMA filing bankruptcy. A statement from current AHRMA Chairman/CEO Dave Janiec on www.ahrma.org reads, in part: “I have been personally responsible under our Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing for reviewing and submitting AHRMA finances each month to the court, and can state that there have been no irregularities.” AHRMA is continuing racing operations and has a full schedule of events planned for 2008.
