AMA Superbike Series Manager Morgan Broadhead crashed during WERA/AMA National Challenge Series 750cc Superstock Qualifying at Jennings GP in Jennings, Florida Friday and was transported by med-evac helicopter to Shands UCF Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida. Broadhead highsided out of Turn Nine about six minutes into the session, which had started at 4:20 p.m., and was unconscious at the scene. The med-evac helicopter landed about 30 minutes after the crash. Broadhead often participates in WERA/AMA National Challenge Series and National Endurance Series events, on his own time, for recreational purposes. Early reports that Broadhead was conscious and alert when he was transported were in error. While he responded to simple commands such as to move his leg or move his hand, Broadhead never actually regained full consciousness, according to visitors to the hospital. Broadhead is currently in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit and has been placed in an induced coma. According to doctors, the next 72 hours will be critical. The qualifying session was cancelled and WERA officials said they would grid Sunday’s 750cc Superstock race based on points. In other news from Jennings GP, racer Phil Caudill’s wallet was stolen around 9:00 a.m. and one of his credit cards was used in nearby Valdosta, Georgia around 10:00 a.m., with four $200 charges made at Wal-Mart within 10 minutes. Caudill’s wallet was in his street pants, stashed in his trailer, while Caudill was out on the track. Caudill filed a report with local law enforcement authorities. Broadhead has been hospitalized at Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla, and is currently in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. Broadhead joined the AMA in December of 2006. Prior to joining the AMA he was employed by American Suzuki Motor Corporation. Broadhead is an expert ranked racer in WERA. The hospital is not permitting visitors.
