David Loikits, Dan Bilansky, Jeff Wood and Doug Polen each won a race Friday at the CCS Race of Champions at Daytona International Speedway, in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Loikits Industries’ Loikits used the speed of his ex-Vincent Haskovec Suzuki GSX-R1000 to hold off a late-race charge from Rodolfo Ramirez to win the Expert GTO race and his first-ever National Championship.

Loikits wasn’t the only first-time winner, however, as Hal’s Performance Advantage Buell’s Dan Bilanksy earned his first CCS National Championship with a victory in the thrilling Thunderbike sprint.

It was not the first time Arclight Suzuki’s Jeff Wood won at Daytona, and it showed as the two-time ASRA Champion made a perfect last-lap draft pass on Team M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Geoff May to win the red-flag-shortened GTU final.

Another rider familiar with winning did so again in the Unlimited Superbike final, as four-time World Champion Doug Polen piloted a Boulder Motorsports Ducati 999R to a convincing win. Polen, 46, said it was his first time racing at Daytona in nine years and he was loving it.

In other action, Moons Cycle II, the defending ASRA Team Challenge Champion, took the overall Team Challenge race win with a Suzuki GSX-R1000 ridden by Mark Harwood and Calvin Martinez. Moons Cycle II only made one pit stop during the race, filling its over-size fuel tank while choosing to stretch one set of Dunlop DOT-labeled tires for the 47-lap race distance.

Due to problems with the electronic timing and scoring system during the race and the resulting protests, official results for the Team Challenge were not released for more than five hours after the completion of the race.

SunTrust MOTO-ST Practice, Team Challenge, CCS Races Kick Off Fall Cycle Scene

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (Oct. 20, 2006) — Motorcycle racing kicked off on Friday at Daytona International Speedway with the 47-lap Team Challenge event and seven Championship Cup Series races.

A familiar face that landed in Gatorade Victory Lane on Friday was Doug Polen, a four-time World champion who won the Expert Unlimited Superbike event aboard his Ducati 999.

“This is a blast to be able to run the old circuit like the way we use to,” Polen said. “The last time I was here competing — the last time I remember — was 1997. So that was nine years ago. I’ve got half dozen laps of practice and have been using these races to feel the bike out. The Ducati 999R is absolutely fantastic. The bike was built by Boulder Motorsports and Brian Sharp. The guy knows what he’s doing and it’s been a great relationship so far.”

Team Challenge: The team of Scott Harwood and Calvin Martinez aboard a Suzuki 600 chased down the Vallely Racing Suzuki 1000 in the second half of the Team Challenge event to capture the overall victory.

“We were just running our own race, just trying to stay consistent and finish,” said Harwood, who rode the first stint. “We came in here with the national championship already wrapped up. This was just a fun time to come out to Daytona and race it up with the other guys.

“We won the previous seven races so we did want to come in here and make it a clean sweep for the season.”

The victory does make it a clean sweep for the season and Harwood gave plenty of credit to Greg Moon, who built the engine on the powerful Suzuki.

“Without him, we wouldn’t have gotten to where we are,” Harwood said. “He builds a solid bike. Every race, we have had a fresh bike. It’s just reliable. We didn’t have one mechanical this year and we didn’t’ have one crash.”

Harwood said the heat was his toughest foe as he turned laps on the legendary 3.56-mile road course.

“The elements were pretty hard core with temperatures in the high 90s and the humidity up so high,” Harwood said. “It was one of those things where it was a battle of the elements. As far as our race strategy it was flawless. We wanted to do one stop and we did that. I believe that got us the first overall. “

Martinez, who rode the last stint, said the race went according to plan.

“We made a rider change and fuel stop at the halfway point,” Martinez said. “The bike was running fast and I know we had to chase down the No. 3 bike (Vallely Racing) and we passed them on the last lap.

“It was a lot of fun out there. It was really hot. (The race) could have been 10 laps shorter. Greg Moon really put a motor on the bike and it really goes on the banks.”

8 Hours At Daytona: The SunTrust MOTO-ST Series 8 Hours At Daytona will go green at 1 p.m. on Saturday with an international field of 39 bikes and more than 100 riders. The SunTrust MOTO-ST Series participated in a two-hour practice session on Friday night to prepare for Saturday’s endurance race.

The 8 Hours At Daytona is the inaugural event for the SunTrust MOTO-ST Series, a new motorcycle endurance racing series that will kick off their 2007 inaugural season in March at DIS during Daytona 200 Week By Honda.

The race will feature $100,000 in purse and lap money and will finish under the lights. The event will mark the first nighttime motorcycle race at DIS since the 1985 Paul Revere 250.

Teams will be required to use a minimum of two and a maximum of three riders in the inaugural 8 Hours At Daytona and all subsequent SunTrust MOTO-ST events. The race will feature three classes of sport twin motorcycles: SuperSport Twins (SST), GrandSport Twins (GST) and Sport Twins (ST).

In memory: Lt. Shawn Sloan, assistant commander of the Polk County (Fla.) Sherriff’s Office ERT (Emergency Response Team) and a 13-year veteran of the agency, is racing his motorcycle during this weekend’s Fall Cycle Scene in honor of D/S Matt Williams and his K-9 partner Diogi, who were killed in the line of duty last month.

An image of Williams and Diogi together are emblazoned on the trailer that houses the motorcycle and on the bike itself. A short ceremony with several of Williams’ fellow K-9 teams and a moment of silence took place before the start of Friday’s races.

Autograph session: Getting the festivities underway for the inaugural 8 Hours At Daytona SunTrust MOTO-ST Series race on Saturday will be an autograph session featuring the full field of riders from the 8 Hours At Daytona and some very special guests.

Beginning at 10 a.m., riders will be on hand in the Speedway’s NEXTEL FANZONE to sign special event posters and commemorative autograph cards.

Joining SunTrust MOTO-ST Series competitors will be founder of the World Superbike Series and winner of the first Daytona Superbike race Steve McLaughlin, four-time World Champion Doug Polen, three-time AMA Grand National Champion Jay Springsteen, 1967 and 1968 AMA Grand National Champion and former Daytona 200 By Honda winner Gary Nixon and former Daytona 200 By Honda winner John Ashmead.
