Rapp and Cardenas Put Pirelli on Formula Xtreme Front Row
At the illimitable Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course of Lexington, Ohio, located pretty much amid the middle of Ohio, racer Steve Rapp put Pirelli on the front row for Saturday s Formula Xtreme race, setting the second-quickest time of the session. Bam, Bitchen, said Rapp s raven-haired Cyrcee, of his excellent performance. Rapp said, I like the track here. It s flowing and all the bad spots have been smoothed over. It s a lot of fun to ride.
Sharing the front row with Rapp for Saturday s FX race is fellow Pirelli rider Martin Cardenas, earning the outside spot on the front row with the fourth best time of the day on his M4 EMGO Suzuki GSX-R600. So quick so soon, doesn’t tend to be Cardenas style, so the thought is he’ll be in front fast. Right behind Cardenas, on row two, are Larry Pegram on his Leo Vince/Foremost Insurance Ducati 848, and Rapp s teammate Chaz Davies, in fifth and sixth on the grid, respectively.
Rapp also rode his Attack Kawasaki to the third-fastest lap in Friday s Supersport practice, on a set of Diablo Supercorsa tires. Teammate Chaz Davies was sixth quickest, followed immediately by Blake Young and Martin Cardenas from the M4 EMGO Suzuki team, Bobby Fong on his Safety First Suzuki, and M4 EMGO Suzuki teammate Cory West, rounding out the top ten.
In Superstock practice Blake Young rode his M4 EMGO Suzuki GSX-R1000 to the front row of the time sheet, with the fourth quickest lap of the session, barely .5s of a second from the fastest bike. Other Pirelli riders in the front pack for Saturday s qualifying include Scott Jensen, Robertino Pietri, David Anthony, and Ryan Elleby, setting the eighth, ninth, tenth and 11th quickest times of the session.

CARDENAS ON FRONT ROW FOR MID-OHIO FORMULA XTREME
Team M4 EMGO Suzuki claimed a front-row grid position on the opening day of AMA competition at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, OH.
Martin Cardenas closed out the successful day by qualifying fourth fastest for tomorrow’s 16-lap Formula Xtreme race. The Colombian guided his Pirelli-shod GSX-R600 around the undulating circuit with a fast time of 1:26.970 to lay claim to the outside of the front row.
“This qualifying session went very well for me,” Cardenas said. “We got in some laps on our race tire and then we tried a couple qualifiers to go for a quick time. On my second try I made a good lap and we ended up on the front row. I’m very happy.”
Blake Young also notched up a top-four performance earlier the day, clocking the fourth fastest time of the morning’s Superstock session. The Wisconsin native registered a best lap of 1:26.431 aboard his potent GSX-R1000.
Young, Cardenas, and Cory West all managed to figure in the top ten in the day’s Supersport free session. Young led the way in seventh at 1:27.886, followed closely behind by eighth ranked Cardenas (1:28.028) and tenth ranked West (1:28.206).
West expects even more as the weekend moves forward.
He explained, “We worked really hard yesterday and it kind of took us a while to get a good set-up, but we came out hot this morning. We tried a few different tires Pirelli had for us this weekend, and I think we’re finding a pretty good combination. Our lap times are pretty consistent — we had a few pretty quick ones but we never really chased anyone today, and I felt like I might have pulled a couple people to their fast laps too.
“I think it’s going to be good if I can just get in a good qualifying session — do something better than the fourth row. I think we can have a really good race this weekend. I like tracks like this where you really have to muscle the bike around. Hopefully we’ll have a little advantage over the little guys that are 130 pounds.”
On Saturday Cardenas will shoot for the podium in the Formula Xtreme final after the team solidifies their grid positions for Sunday’s Superstock and Supersport races.
