In the midst of high temperatures, Rapp was able to turn out a of 1:25.509 near the end of the 30-minute session to qualify second. Teammate Chaz Davies clocked a 1:26.550 to qualify seventh. During the first AMA Superbike qualifying session, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jamie Hacking earned a provisional spot on the front row with a 1:24.491, good enough for fourth. Teammate Roger Hayden is out for the weekend with injuries he received at the second round last weekend. The second session for the AMA Superbike class be Saturday morning, while the AMA Formula Xtreme race will take place in the afternoon. More, from a press release issued by Pirelli: Rome, Georgia: At Fontana, California’s Auto Club Speedway formerly known as California Speedway Pirelli riders earned half the front row in Formula Xtreme qualifying for Saturday’s race. Steve Rapp stopped the clocks with the second-fastest time of the grid on his Attack Kawasaki ZX-6R, shod with Pirelli Superbike Slicks. Rapp’s teammate Chaz Davies is right behind him on the second row at seventh quickest, qualifying on his backup bike after a minor fall midway through the session. Joining Rapp on the front row for the FX race is Larry Pegram on his team Leo Vince/Foremost Insurance Ducati 848, earning the third best time. Joining Davies on row two is Martin Cardenas riding a GSX-R600 for the M4 EMGO Suzuki team. Cardenas set the fifth-best time during qualifying which put him on the inside of row two, a formidable position for this Columbian rider who tends to go even quicker in races than in qualifying. With Pirelli riders earning four of the top-seven fastest times the battle has moved from one for the podium to being for the Formula Xtreme win. In Superstock practice at the Auto Club road course, the fastest Pirelli rider was Blake Young riding for team M4 EMGO Suzuki, setting the fourth-best time of the day’s single session. Fifth fastest was Robertino Pietri on his Roadracingworld.com Suzuki GSX-R1000. In with the eighth-best time was Pietri’s teammate Chris Ulrich, followed by Hawk Mazzotta with the ninth best, each also on GSX-R1000s. Supersport practice saw four Pirelli riders in a row with the fifth through eighth best times of the morning practice. Chaz Davies and teammate Steve Rapp led the group with their Attack Kawasaki ZX-6Rs, with M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Cory West and Blake Young putting their GSX-R600s in the seventh and eighth fastest spots. More, from a press release issued by Team M4 EMGO Suzuki: CARDENAS QUALIFIES FIFTH FOR FONTANA FX RACE Team M4 EMGO Suzuki got off their weekend at Auto Club Speedway off to a strong start in sunny and hot Fontana, CA on Friday. Martin Cardenas qualified on the second row for the Formula Xtreme contest while Cory West and Blake Young marked up impressive practice performances. Just like last weekend in Alabama, Colombian Cardenas just missed qualifying on the front row for Saturday’s Formula Xtreme race aboard his Pirelli-shod GSX-R600, again earning the inside slot on the second row with the fifth fastest time during the session (1:26.055). The former Spanish Supersport champion will now look to also repeat last weekend’s raceday performance, when he improved on Saturday to finish second in the race. “Qualifying went well,” Cardenas said. “I was hoping to be on the front row but today it wasn’t possible. Still I’m happy with the time that I did. I managed to go a second and a half faster than the times I was doing before so I’m quite happy. “The race is going to be difficult for everybody. The track is very hot and the grip is not as I like it but I will try my best and hopefully get on the podium again.” Blake Young came into Fontana looking for redemption following last weekend’s Superstock disappointment. The Wisconsin native got off to a promising start, guiding his GSX-R1000 Superstock machine to a best time of 1:25.688 in the class’ sole morning session, fourth fastest overall. Cory West led Team M4 EMGO Suzuki’s effort in the Supersport class. The Eureka Spring, AR resident logged a 1:27.423 to rank seventh best in the free practice, just fractionally quicker than eighth-placed Young (1:27.430). Cardenas was just a few tenths off his teammates at 1:27.773, putting him 12th fastest in the session. On Saturday Team M4 EMGO Suzuki will first qualify for Sunday’s Supersport and Superstock races and then Cardenas will attempt to claim his second consecutive podium in the FX race.
