YAMAHA SEES RAIN AND SUN AT BARBER Birmingham, AL June 17, 2011 LTD Racing Y.E.S. Yamaha saw a trying day with heavy rain followed by clear conditions in the afternoon at Babrer Motorsports Park, but David Gaviria was able to qualify second in AMA Pro SuperSport at the scenic Alabama circuit. Tomy Puerta earned fifth despite difficulties in his session and Sam Nash earned 15th provisionally. Huntley Nash, a former race winner at the circuit, saw a promising session result in 15th place in his only dry track time of the day in Daytona SportBike. Gaviria, twice a race winner this season, was able to put the number 700 machine on the overnight front row. The Colombian has been a strong qualifier in addition to a superlative racer this year and Friday was no different. “We had a good session,” said Gaviria. “I felt great out there. Still, we think we can improve the bike and we have some ideas for tomorrow. I think we can improve our times even more and be ready for the races. I really like the track. It is very fun and technical. It has it all, hard braking and a collection of the best turns from the other tracks.” Tomas Puerta has been a front-row fixture this season and won the last pole at Road America two weeks ago. Friday, however, was tough for the Colombian as an equipment problem slowed the East division SuperSport points leader and he was only able to qualify fifth, a credible performance but not up to his standard front row start. “I didn’t like our qualifying,” said Puerta. “I had an equipment problem and I couldn’t breathe and my back was hurting. I had to stop and make a change. I went back out with the issue fixed but I never got a clean lap. I will try my best tomorrow morning to get on the front row. I will try to get a lap with no one in front of me and no mistakes and I think we can get up there.” Sam Nash preferred the wet to the dry as the law school student led the wet practice at one point. Nash qualified 15th in the dry. “I liked it more in the wet!” joked Nash. “I have some things to work on in the dry but I thought it was a good start to the weekend.” Huntley Nash had a productive day. Last year a race winner at Barber in SuperSport, Huntley made the jump to the ultra-competitive Daytona SportBike class this year. The 19 year-old earned 15th in the dry afternoon session. “It was an okay day for us. We really didn’t have much dry track time and we still have some work to do to improve front-end feel,” said Nash. “We started out with one setting but I already reached the limits with that. We were bottoming out the front so it was impossible to push harder in those corners. The team is working hard and we have some changes we’ll make tomorrow. I think we made a breakthrough on Sunday at Road America and we want to keep up our momentum.” LTD Racing’s Director of Competition Gary Medley said, “For all the chaos of the rain and whatnot, all the boys did well on the track. Huntley is going well, the team has a little work to do with the front end of his bike but he’s riding hard and he’s building up speed. David was up there again and he’ll be good for the race. Tomy had some problems today but we know he can bear down and get the job done in the morning. Sam had a pretty good day. He got a little tired at the end but he’s not a regular so that’s to be expected every once in a while.”
