The AMA Formula Xtreme practice session Friday afternoon at Auto Club Speedway was red-flagged with about 20 minutes remaining due to a fiery crash involving Canadian rider Amber Rimes. Rimes tangled with Rockwall Honda’s Aaron Gobert as they approached Turn Three of the 2.3-mile infield road course. Aaron Gobert did not fall, but Rimes crashed. As soon as Rimes’ Yamaha YZF-R6 hit the ground it burst into flames, according to eyewitness Alex Gobert. Late-model Yamaha YZF-R6s have been known to catch on fire after relatively minor crashes, leading some sanctioning bodies, like WERA, to require they be fitted with protective guards for their fuel tanks. AMA Pro Racing does not require the use of tank guards. AMA Formula Xtreme Championship Auto Club Speedway Fontana, California April 25, 2008 Provisional Practice Results: 1.
