Paul Allison, 17 More, from a press release issued by Geiger Media on behalf of GEICO: GEICO Suzuki rider Cardenas limits damage with fifth-place finish LEEDS, Ala. (June 23) — Despite riding Saturday’s main event of the Triumph SuperBike Classic without a rear brake, Daytona SportBike championship leader Martin Cardenas did a fine job of damage control by finishing in fifth place on his GEICO Suzuki. By maintaining his composure, Cardenas lost just two points to second-ranked rider Jason DiSalvo, who was fourth overall. Cardenas knew he was handicapped before the start of the race when his award-winning crew changed his rear tire after the warm-up lap, something they routinely do. “They told me to check the rear brake pedal and there was nothing there,” Cardenas said. “Right then I knew I needed to focus on riding smart and safe to get as many points as I could. I knew a win was not there for me in this race.” As the lead group of riders separated themselves from the main pack, Cardenas stayed towards the front of the chase pack until he figured out the best way to ride his GSX-R600 around Barber Motorsports Park without the advantage of the back brake. “Most riders don’t use the rear brake but I do, some times quite a bit,” Cardenas said. “I could see through the first few laps that the leaders were pulling away a little bit each time around and I had to remind myself to just make the best of the day. I got comfortable and realized I could take fifth place so that’s what I tried to do. If necessary, maybe I could have made a charge but the risk wasn’t worth the reward.” While the top three riders headed to the winner’s circle, Cardenas and crew already were dissecting the issue with the front brake. “I’ve never seen this happen before,” crew chief Frank Aragaki said. “We’ll figure out what caused this and get it fixed for sure. For tomorrow, we’ll just replace everything. I have to say that Martin did an awesome job for us. Championships are won on the bad days and if this is the worst thing to happen to us then I’ll be happy.” A winner of six out of nine races this year, Cardenas will hit the track for a warm-up session at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Race 2 for the GoPro Daytona SportBike class will start at 2:15 p.m. and last for 21 laps around the 2.38-mile, 14-turn circuit. More, from a press release issued by Yamaha: Yamaha Extended Service/Graves/Yamaha Rider Beaubier Notches First Career Daytona SportBike Win; Teammate Hayden Also On Barber Podium Birmingham, AL June 23, 2012 A few hours after notching the first Daytona SportBike pole of his young career, Cameron Beaubier got his first career DSB win in a hotly contested race one at Barber Motorsports Park. The lead changed hands a number of times, and Cameron raced his #6 Yamaha Extended Service/Graves/Yamaha YZF-R6 to a hard-fought win. “At the beginning of the race, I could see that the pace was going to be really quick today,” Cameron said. “We diced back and forth a little bit, and I just pushed really hard to get my first win.” Cameron also led the most laps in the race, and earned the bonus point for his effort. Cameron’s Y.E.S./Graves/Yamaha teammate Tommy Hayden, riding the #22 R6, was also very much in contention for the win throughout the majority of the race. He led a couple of times during the contest and ultimately finished third to put both Y.E.S./Graves/Yamahas in the winner’s circle. Tommy said, “It felt good to lead the race and I thought, with 3 or 4 laps to go there, I had a pretty good chance to win. I just need to get a little bit more of an edge and, hopefully, get the win tomorrow.” The second Daytona SportBike race of the weekend is scheduled for tomorrow at 2:15 PM CST and, if it’s anything like today’s DSB Race 1, then you won’t want to miss it. More, from a press release issued by LTD Racing: LTD RACING’S NASH 12th IN TOUGH ALABAMA HEAT Birmingham, AL (June 23, 2012) LTD Racing’s Huntley Nash finished 12th in the first of two AMA Pro Daytona SportBike races at Barber Motorsports Park this weekend. While running inside the top ten, the young rider found himself in a tough spot in the race, the hottest one so far in the 2012 season. After building momentum during 2012, Nash has been pushing to fight with the lead group in the competitive Daytona SportBike class and did the same on Saturday. But with the heat and fading grip, Nash ended up fighting his machine as much as his rivals and the race proved to be a contest of physical endurance. Nash rallied to bring the bike home and score more points. “The race was okay. I went just as quick as I did in qualifying,” said Nash. “I was up to ninth for the first few laps and trying to catch onto the group that Zemke and Cardenas were in. That would have been ideal because I’m trying my best to keep learning what it takes to run up front. Around lap eight, a combination of the tire grip falling off and the track conditions made it tough to push. I probably could have run up in ninth and finished there but I faded because of the heat at the end and just barley made it.” Nash said he gave full effort in the 21-lap race and was rewarded with a finish for himself and his team when many riders would have pulled in and called it a day. “Huntley rode really hard today and when he got off the bike after the race, we could tell he gave it everything he had,” said LTD Racing’s Jon Schiereck. “There’s one section of the track we need to improve the bike for him and we think that will help the lap time quite a bit.” Nash said he feels things can improve for Sunday’s race. “The bike could use a little work as we try to get it closer and we’ll try some things in the morning,” said Nash. “I’m looking forward to giving it another shot.” More, from a press release issued by Team Hammer: WESTBY FIGHTS FOR DAYTONA SPORTBIKE WIN, FINISHES A CLOSE SECOND IN ALABAMA M4 Suzuki’s Dane Westby backed up Friday’s run to provisional pole by battling for the victory and earning a podium finish in Saturday’s AMA Pro Daytona SportBike race at Barber Motorsports Park. Westby’s recent efforts to improve his starts paid off when he fired off the front row of the grid in third aboard his GSX-R600. That strong launch allowed the Oklahoman to dice in the lead four-rider group throughout the 21-lap contest waged under brutally hot conditions. Westby and his M4 crew made a late call to opt for the softer compound rear tire and ‘the Wolverine’ did well to make that tire last. He charged up into third from fourth on lap 16 and then slotted into second a lap later with a hard-braking maneuver into Turn 4. Westby made a final push for the win on the last lap but was only able to take control of the lead momentarily with another braking move, but was unable to hold the tight line on the drive out. The M4 Suzuki ace ultimately took the checkered flag just 0.242-seconds off the victory. Westby continues to hold third in the points with 167 points on the strength of three podium finishes this season. “It was pretty slick out there and the guys were riding good. The M4 Suzuki was going really good for me. It was getting the traction even though it was really greasy out there. We decided to go with the soft tire at the last minute by group decision and it turned out to be the right decision. I think they would have got away in the beginning and I don’t think there was enough time in the medium tire to catch back up once their tires went off, so that was a good decision. I was pretty strong on the brakes but they were getting me a little on the gas. We’ll get him next time.” Elena Myers came out strong in Saturday’s AMA Pro SuperSport race. The popular Suzuki SportbikeTrackGear.com GSX-R600 pilot moved up quickly from her third-row starting position (9th, 1:31.520) to take control of a five-rider scrap for fourth early in the race. Myers fought through the heat and humidity to take a seventh-place effort aboard her GSX-600. Elena remains in third in the West Region points race with 127 points. M4 Suzuki’s Chris Ulrich and Team Venezuela’s Robertino Pietri were engaged in a black-white-and-red fight over 10th position in the opening stages of Saturday’s AMA Pro Superbike race. Ulrich made a move past Pietri on lap 7 of 21 but crashed out of the race unhurt in the hard-braking Turn 4 when he hit a sealer-covered seam in the pavement. Pietri continued on and eventually took the checkered flag in 11th. Westby, Myers, Ulrich, and Pietri will be back in action on Sunday to conclude the AMA Pro Road Racing weekend at Barber Motorsports Park.
