Attack Kawasaki’s Josh Hayes won the $150,000-purse Toyota 200 at Willow Springs Raceway today for the second consecutive year, finishing 80 seconds ahead of Lion Racing’s Michael Barnes. Attack Kawasaki’s Ben Attard was third ahead of Las Vegas Racing’s Jack Pfeifer and Chris Ulrich Racing’s Vincent Haskovec. Hayes won $50,000 while Barnes won $30,000 and Attard won $10,000 in the 80-lap, 200-mile race. An irate Attard demanded (without success) that WSMC pay him $20,000 because the giant check used at the trophy presentation mistakenly read “$20,000” instead of the $10,000-for-third published in race literature and advertising. Rich Oliver won the $30,000-purse Roadracing World 250/50, a 50-mile/20-lap race for 250cc GP racebikes, ahead of Michael Montoya and Mark Watts. Montoya came from the back of the first wave after he was sent there by WSMC officials for missing the warm-up lap. The day started with spitting rain and a wet track but conditions dried out before noon. Very strong winds were a problem throughout the day. Despite the difficult conditions, there were very few crashes and no riders had to be transported to the hospital. Haskovec raced Hayes hard for the Toyota 200 lead through the first round of pit stops, and caught Hayes after both pitted for the first time despite the Attack crew changing both wheels and refueling in about half the time it took Haskovec’s crew. Haskovec was still in contention until the second round of pit stops, when Haskovec did not pit on the planned lap and instead ran out of fuel out on the course. Hayes was not challenged after that. Haskovec and his crew had been unable to check fuel mileage because the bike was destroyed in a vicious crash Saturday morning and wasn’t completely rebuilt until late Saturday night. Rain in practice Sunday morning and a lack of available rain tires prevented a fuel check before the race, and until the warm-up lap was completed, Haskovec’s crew was unsure that the bike had a raceable set-up. Haskovec was a last-minute substitute for Chris Ulrich, who underwent surgery Thursday night to repair shoulder injuries suffered at VIR. Ulrich had sorted out the Roadracingworld.com-sponsored bike and signed up the crew of Ed Sorbo, James Lickwar, Evan Steel and Frank Aragaki but was unable to attend the event. Pfeifer was back on a Suzuki for the Toyota 200 and rode a steady race to fourth. Pfeiffer briefly switched from Pirelli to Dunlop, telling reporters that the Pirelli vendor at the track did not have the tires he needed, but raced on Pirellis. Michael Montoya put his Yamaha TZ250 into fifth before it dropped a cylinder and he retired. Hayes and Attard were on Dunlop tires, while Barnes ran on Pirelli tires. AMA Superbike rider and Honda engineer James Kerker, recently immortalized on The Crash Page in Roadracing World magazine, finished 15th on the same set of tires he started the race on.
