After a shaky first year with relatively low participation numbers the fledgling American Sportbike Roadracing Association (ASRA, formerly known as Formula USA) will continue in 2007 and will even add a new class for 1000cc machines. That’s the word from ASRA, and CCS, boss Kevin Elliott, who told Roadracingworld.com he planned to have a maximum eight-round ASRA series next year at the series’ traditional venues with a few alterations. The return of the event at Autobahn Country Club, in Joliet, Illinois, is questionable, and a second ASRA weekend at VIRginia International Raceway may be added in its place. ASRA regulars will be happy to hear that the Road America event has been moved from April to July, and the date of the event at Heartland Park Topeka may also change. New for 2007 will be a Superstock class for 1000cc machines. Superstock will have maximum horsepower and minimum weight restrictions, but tires will not be restricted, meaning competitors can use DOT-labeled or slick tires, if they chose. Elliott said he anticipated full manufacturer contingency support of the new Superstock class. The existing 600cc Superbike class may go away unless a title sponsor for the class is found. Elliott said he had a potential sponsor for the class and should know its future by the middle of November. The 600cc Sportbike class will return as the premier class, and Factory Pro Tuning has given a verbal commitment to return as the class’ title sponsor and as the official dynamometer of ASRA. The Thunderbike class for Twins, older Inline Four-powered sportbikes and other machines will return unchanged and has four potential sponsors lined up for naming rights. ASRA Team Challenge, as in 2006, will not be included at all ASRA National weekends and may run at selected CCS regional events. All ASRA classes will continue to offer cash purses, but the purse will fluctuate according to the number of entries with a minimum $1000 purse guaranteed at all events and a maximum of a $2525 purse for a 35-rider field.
