(June 1) — Three AMA Pro Daytona SportBike riders bettered the established elapsed time record at historic Road America Friday, and as usual, GEICO Suzuki rider and current class points leader Martin Cardenas was in the mix. Cardenas initially clocked a 2:19.949 around the 4.05-mile, 14-turn road course — the first sub-2:20 circuit ever — before lowering the mark to 2:19.933. Remarkably, his best time ended up third overall as rivals Cameron Beaubier and Jason DiSalvo both ran fractionally quicker laps in the latter stages of the session. “The bike felt very good, very fast,” Cardenas said. “I think I could have gone even quicker there at the end but I am pleased with the consistency of the laps we made.” All the top riders will get a chance to improve their qualifying position Saturday morning beginning at 9:20 a.m. when the Group A riders set the final grid. The first of two GoPro Daytona SportBike main events begins at 2 p.m. “We should be very quick again,” Cardenas said. “The weather was cool today, which I think helps the performance of the motorcycles, and it’s supposed to be very similar tomorrow. I am sure we will be prepared to make a move. “I rode both bikes in the practice session this morning and we made some changes from there to prepare for qualifying. The bike we selected responded very well to the adjustments and it was easy to ride. I am very happy with everything at the moment. No problems.” Cardenas leads the championship rankings by 31 points on the strength of four victories in six races this season. He has started on the pole four times. Not only was it the first-ever Daytona SportBike provisional pole for Cameron, but his best lap time of 2:19.638 was the fastest anyone has ever circulated Road America’s historic 4.05-mile, 14-turn road course in DSB competition. Cameron’s Y.E.S./Graves/Yamaha teammate Tommy Hayden, who is filling in for injured teammate Garrett Gerloff, qualified his #8 R6 in eighth place and is provisionally on row 2 going into final qualifying. That final qualifying session for Daytona SportBike is scheduled for tomorrow at 8:50 AM CST, and DSB Race 1 will go green later tomorrow at 2:00 PM CST. More, from a press release issued by LTD Racing: NASH SHOWS SPEED AT ROAD AMERICA Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin (June 1, 2012) — LTD Racing’s Huntley Nash got off to a great start at Road America. After turning 20 years old yesterday, Nash was fast in the opening AMA Pro Daytona SportBike practice and first qualifying on Friday. Huntley took ninth in practice and tenth on qualifying, but his lap times were very promising at the 4.05-mile track. “It’s going well for us so far this weekend,” said Nash, whose best mark was 2:21.854. “I went two seconds faster than I’ve ever gone here before, including when I won in SuperSport a couple of years back. I really do like this track and I figured out some stuff with my riding in the last few laps at Miller and will continue to work on getting better. In qualifying, I went fastest on some tires that had gone race distance when I did my best lap. For Nash, the weekend offers a chance to regain the momentum of the year’s first two events that saw him perform his best since joining the ultra-competitive DSB field in 2011 after winning multiple races in SuperSport. “I think we’re in the mix,” said Nash. “I really want to be competing with the front guys and shooting for the podium. Looking at lap times over race distances, I think we’re very close. It will be tough, but we’re giving it everything we can to have some good races.” More, from a press release issued by Team Hammer: M4 SUZUKI’S DANE WESTBY FAST AT ROAD AMERICA M4 Suzuki’s Dane “The Wolverine” Westby came out of the gates in convincing fashion at Road America on Friday to open Round 5 of the 2012 AMA Pro Road Racing Championships. Westby immediately featured near the top of the charts in the opening Daytona SportBike practice session aboard his #5 GSX-R600. The Oklahoman was fastest for a spell in the practice and ultimately finished the session third-fastest with an impressive time of 2:21.923 despite the cool and somewhat windy conditions at the Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin racetrack on Friday. Westby stepped up from there in the afternoon’s subsequent qualifying session, throwing down a 2:20.852 to stand fifth in the provisional order at the end of the day. Westby, who finished on the podium at Road America last season, said, “Things are going well. I went faster than I’ve ever gone here before, which is a good sign on the first day. In qualifying, I was able to set a pretty decent time although I think there’s more there to be had. I will be able to better utilize a softer tire tomorrow and I know I’ll be there in the race.” SuzukiScoopFans SportbikeTrackGear.com Suzuki’s Elena Myers also shined during last season’s stop at Elkhart Lake, leading several laps of the second SuperSport race and missing a podium of her own by just fractions of a second. Myers was in the top five in both SuperSport sessions on Friday, ranking fifth in the free practice and in the first of two qualifying sessions. Myers was nearly two seconds quicker in qualifying than in practice, improving from 2:25.540 to 2:23.818. It was a similar story for M4 Suzuki’s Chris Ulrich. While his position didn’t change from practice to qualifying (15th), the AMA Pro Superbike pilot made a marked improvement in lap times, slicing his 2:18.652 down to a 2:16.623. Team Venezuela’s Robertino Pietri suffered a tough blow on Friday. The former Moto2 pilot impressed with the seventh-fastest time in the Superbike free session (2:16.183), but crashed in qualifying, bringing out a red flag. He ended the day in 13th at 2:15.812, but more pressing was his condition following the crash. The Venezuelan crashed in Turn 3 and suffered broken ribs in the fall. Team Hammer riders will be back in action on Saturday at Road America to claim final grid positions and contest the weekend’s opening SportBike, SuperSport, and Superbike races.
