Brian Parriott took his San Jose BMW to victory in the ASRA Superbike final at Daytona Saturday afternoon after a cloudburst in the chicane on lap four put three riders on the ground and brought out the red flag. He was ultimately disqualified for failing to report to post-race tech. Michael Barnes was leading when he ran into a wall of rain in the chicane on lap four; Barnes, who later said there were no warning flags displayed, managed to save it but his teammate Geoff May, who was running second, lost the front and crashed. Behind him, Brian Stokes fell and his spinning Yamaha collected Michael Beck. May and Beck were unhurt but Stokes complained of wrist pain and was taken to the infield care center. Parriott controlled the restarted race, and Jeff Wood finished second on a Yamaha ahead of Darren Luck. Only a handful of riders made the restart, and Barnes declined to continue. In overcast-but-dry conditions earlier, M4 EMGO Suzuki’s May had won the ASRA Superstock race on a 2007 Suzuki GSX-R1000 with Roadracingworld.com’s Chris Ulrich second on another 2007 GSX-R1000. David Loikits finished third on a 2005 GSX-R1000, making the finishing order identical to qualifying order for the top three riders. Later, Parriott caught and split winner Dave Estok and third-place Darren James to finish second in the wet Thunderbike race, Estok and James riding Buells, and this time Parriott managed to find post-race tech and keep his results. And Swede Fredrick Watz won the soggy Factory Pro Sportbike race, holding off charging Aussie transplant David Anthony in the run to the line, with Wood third. If the last two days are any indication of what Sunday’s SunTrust MOTO-ST DAYTONA USA 300 results might be, save a podium spot for Brian Parriott. “I’m just having fun,” he said as his team looked over his San Jose BMW in the garage area on Saturday, seeming particularly comfortable in the historic confines of Daytona International Speedway. “We have guys we’ll be gunning for and some guys will be gunning for us. We just have to keep our heads down and go.” Parriott is making that feat look pretty easy. On Saturday, the 39-year-old collected a second-place finish in the 10-lap ThunderBike Final after qualifying on the pole for the event and a first-place finish in the rain-filled SuperBike final by 33 seconds. “This win is definitely a surprise. It was scary track conditions but nice to be here in Victory Lane.” On Friday, he posted a first-place finish in Expert GT Lights and oh, yes, he and teammate Nate Kern are defending champions in the SunTrust MOTO-ST 8 Hours of Daytona which was held in October. “You can’t really consider yourself a favorite in anything. It’s racing. Anything can happen,” he said. “We have a good package and know we can run competitive lap times. That being said, I think we have a pretty good shot.” Sunday’s race gets the green flag at 2 p.m. In the morning CCS Sprints: Chris Sullivan of Cooper City, Fla., made things look easy on his Ducati 1000, placing first in Lightweight GP Amateur and third in Lightweight SuperBike Amateur competition. In the afternoon ASRA and CCS races: Rains slowed the field and miserable conditions shortened all scheduled races. “I think I could have walked faster then most of the bikes were going,” said third place SuperBike finisher Darren Luck of Bonita Springs, Fla. Following races on Saturday, despite continued rainfall, riders participating in the SunTrust MOTO-ST DAYTONA USA 300 took to the track for a practice session. Among the teams currently listed to compete in the DAYTONA USA 300 in addition to Parriott and Kern include: RoadRacingWorld.com Suzuki and riders Chris Ulrich, Robertino Pietri of Venezuela and Lee Acree; John Ashmead, the last privateer rider to win the historic Daytona 200 By Honda, with co-rider Paul Schwemmer; Jimmy Filice, the legendary dirt and road racer and motorcycle Hall of Famer, returns with the Pair A Nines team and fellow Hall of Famer Jay Springsteen; and Nicole Hoffman, manager of interactive marketing at NASCAR and co-rider Robert Fisher aboard the No. 16 RightsForBikers.com Suzuki.
