Francesco Cocco, 39 More, from a press release issued by Team Garnier Alpha Racing: FIM Cup Superstock 1000 Round 10 Portimão (Portugal) October 16, 2011 McCormick 0.02 in front of Reiterberger Brett McCormick from Canada and Markus Reiterberger from Germany enjoyed a nice race in Portugal, dicing together all the way to the checkered flag. It was a nice fight, fast and clean, and there were only two hundredths of a second between the two team mates on the finish line. Qualifications were not easy, but the race was much better. Both riders, and their Australian team mate Beau Beaton, all had a great start. Brett and Markus tried as hard as they could to get into the top ten, which is not easy when you are racing for the first time on the Portimão race track. They did a great job and finished in 10th and 11th positions, and the team was very happy about it. Beau Beaton lost a few positions because of various little problems, but he still managed to cross the finish line in 17th position. Randy Pagaud, who is not very much at ease on the Portuguese track, did the best he could but was not so happy with his race. The winner was Danilo Petrucci (Barni Racing Team Ducati), who finished in front of Sylvain Barrier (BMW Motorrad Italia) and Sheridan Morais (Lorenzini by Leoni Kawasaki). Bryan Staring (Team Pedercini Kawasaki) was fourth, in front of Lorenzo Zanetti (BMW Motorrad Italia), Andrea Antonelli (Team Lorini Honda) and Loris Baz (Ten Kate Junior Team Honda). Michel Garnier (team owner): “Overall, it was a good race. Markus was 18th on the starting grid and Brett started in 15th position. They both started very well. Markus was immediately 8th, and both he and Brett did a brilliant race. Beau was very good too, he was 14th for a while, but he had a little problem by the end. Randy did what he could. He is still learning. Overall it’s a good weekend because they all finish the race. I am proud of them. I appreciate their effort.” Brett McCormick: “The race was good. I got a good start again like in France. I came around in the top 12 and just kind of settled and did a good pace. I put my head down and put some very good laps. I finished tenth, went faster than when I qualified. I am happy but it sucks to have the crash on the first day that set me back from being closer to the front. But I am still happy.” Markus Reiterberger: “My start was very good. I was in 8th position at the end of the first lap. I had a cool fight with McCormick, it was a nice race. With two laps to go, Guarnoni touched my leathers when he crashed. I finish in 11th position and the championship in 8th position, for me this is very great.” Beau Beaton: “It was OK. I got a really good start, probably my best of the season. I made some mistakes and lost a couple of positions in Turn 4. With 3, 4 laps to go, I had a moment out of the second last corner. I lost a couple of spots and I was out the points, unfortunately.” Randy Pagaud: “It was a complicated race. I couldn’t be as fast as during practice. By the end, I got a little bit tired of it.” More, from a press release issued by Althea Racing: VERY DIFFICULT SEASON FINALE FOR BARONI (ALTHEA RACING), TWELFTH IN THE STK 1000 RACE AT PORTIMAO Portimao (Portugal), Sunday 16th October 2011: the tenth and final round of the SUperstock 1000 FIM Cup took palce this morning at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve but unfortunately the result for Lorenzo Baroni (Althea Racing) was not what he had hoped for; he closed in twelfth position after having lost some places due to a lack of grip. The STK 1000 riders rode an 11-lap race today, rather than the scheduled 12, due to a problem with the starting lights that forced the riders to make two warm-up laps. Althea rider Baroni started from sixth on the grid, holding that position through the first lap. On the second he got past Baz and then continued to fight with the Honda rider through the next couple of laps. From mid-race on Lorenzo began to lose grip and his lap times didn’t allow him to stay with the front group. He lost another couple of positions in the final stages, crossing the line in final twelfth position. Lorenzo closes the 2011 championship in seventh position overall with a total of 74 points. His best results of the season were three fourth place finishes. Davide Giugliano already took the Superstock 1000 championship title for Althea Racing at the penultimate round of Magny-Cours and this weekend participates in the Superbike race as a wildcard entry. Lorenzo Baroni “I’m really disappointed with today’s result. I knew I had a real chance to reach the podium here but it didn’t go to plan. In the first laps I was fighting in the front group, with Baz, and I had a good pace but from around the mid-race point I really started suffering from a lack of grip and the bike was moving around a lot. I couldn’t stay with those ahead of me and lost positions, finishing twelfth. It’s a shame as we’d been working well all weekend. I thank the whole team for their hard work this season.” RESULT: 1.
