Xerox Ducati factory rider Michel Fabrizio jumped to the top of the order in Saturday morning’s World Superbike qualifying session at Miller Motorsports Park, but the young Italian’s impressive lap (1:49.204) went largely unnoticed. At the same time Fabrizio was bettering Jakub Smrz’s 1:49.329 and Ben Spies’ 1:49.773, Noriyuki Haga, Fabrizio’s teammate and the Superbike World Championship point leader, was highsiding into the dirt outside of Tooele Turn. Haga, lying near the edge of the racetrack, did not move for a few seconds, and officials immediately called for a red flag so medical crews could attend to him. Haga slowly started moving, then sat up and after a few moments walked into an ambulance with only minimal assistance. Not long after, World Superbike Press Officer Julian Thomas announced in the media center that Haga had only suffered some bruising and that he had already returned to his team’s garage. No video replays of the crash were shown. Other unlucky riders in the session were Tommy Hill, who crashed his Honda Althea CBR1000RR at the exit of Bad Attitude, and BMW Motorrad Motorsport’s Ruben Xaus, who suffered a mechanical problem late in the session and failed to qualify for Superpole. Remarkably, the session was restarted for its final two minutes and 42 seconds, enough time for a single flying. Few moved up with the last-chance opportunity, but Team Pedercini’s David Salom managed to jump up into the top 20, bumping Xaus’ teammate Troy Corser out of Superpole. Aprilia’s Max Biaggi, who led the first qualifying session on Friday, failed to improve on his 1:49.820 and slipped to fourth in the order.
