The day went pretty well with a regular progression, for the riders and for the settings of the bikes. Monza is not a simple track, but the three riders of the team like its original layout. They have better racing lines lap after lap and Saturday looks promising. The provisional pole position went to Lorenzo Zanetti, in front of his team mate Sylvain Barrier and Danilo Petrucci. Michel Garnier (team owner): “This first session was pretty good, as the riders didn’t know the track at all, and this is only their second race with this bike. They need time to learn the track. Last week, there was here an Italian championship race and many riders participated, so they know the settings already. Markus was fifth for a while, but his engine broke. Randy progressed, so I am happy with this session. The technical crew did a great job.” Markus Reiterberger: “In the morning it was OK. I have never been here before. In the first qualifying session, I did my first two or three laps and it was getting better and better. Then in the third lap, in a fast right hand corner, the engine broke. Now we change the engine and we are looking for tomorrow.” Beau Beaton: “We made some good progress with the bike. I think this track is very difficult to overcome. When we will have some good settings, we will be on the pace I think.” Randy Pagaud: “It has been a good Friday on this track that I didn’t know, but very fast and impressive. It’s a great experience. Regarding the chassis, we go in a good direction. We are not as far as we were in Assen on the first day. Now we can start working to qualify in the top 20.” Results of the 1st practice session: 1- Lorenzo Zanetti BMW Motorrad Italia Superstock BMW S1000RR 1’46.381 2- Sylvain Barrier BMW Motorrad Italia Superstock BMW S1000RR + 0.207 3- Danilo Petrucci Barni Racing Team Ducati 1098R + 0.494 4- Michele Magnoni Baru Racing Team BMW S1000RR + 0.591 5- Marco Bussolotti Kawasaki ZX-10R + 0.632 6- Bryan Staring Team Pedercini Kawasaki ZX-10R + 0.647 7- Lorenzo Baroni Althea Racing Ducati 1098R + 0.812 8- Fabio Massei Team Piellemoto BMW S1000RR + 1.044 9- Sheridan Morais Lorenzini by Leoni Kawasaki ZX-10R + 1.200 10- Eddi La Marra Team Lorini Honda CBR 1000RR + 1.474 11- Leandro Mercado Team Pedercini Kawasaki ZX-10R + 1.800 12- Andrea Antonelli Team Lorini Honda CBR 1000RR + 1.907 13- Lorenzo Savadori Lorenzini by Leoni Kawasaki ZX-10R + 2.017 14- Niccolò Canepa GoEleven Kawasaki ZX-10R + 2.092 15- Riccardo Fusco EFFE Racing BMW S1000RR + 2.134 “¦19- Markus Reiterberger Team Garnier alpha Racing BMW S1000RR + 2.421 “¦23- Beau Beaton Team Garnier alpha Racing BMW S1000RR + 3.019 “¦26- Randy Pagaud Team Garnier alpha Racing BMW S1000RR + 3.399 Superstock 1000 FIM Cup provisional standings: 1- Davide Giugliano Althea Racing Ducati 1098R, 2- Danilo Petrucci Barni Racing Team Ducati 1098R, 3- Sylvain Barrier BMW Motorrad Italia BMW S1000RR, 4- Lorenzo Baroni Althea Racing Ducati 1098R, 5- Bryan Staring Team Pedercini Kawasaki ZX-10R A track with a great history Monza was built in 1922 (in only 100 days!) by the Milan Automobile Club. The “Autodromo Nazionale di Monza” is only 15 km from Milan. It is the oldest permanent racing circuit still used in Europe and the third such circuit to have been built after Brooklands (GB / 1907) and Indianapolis (USA 1909). The track is 5.777 km long and features a 2.405 km long oval, which is no longer used. The main straight is 1.195 km long. The first Grand Prix of the Nations (September 8, 1922) was won by Amadeo Ruggeri on a 1000 cc Harley-Davidson. In the 500 class, the winner was Italian Gnesa on 2-stroke 350 Garelli. A very special circuit Monza is the fastest circuit on the World Superbike calendar. The track has two very slow chicanes, the “Prima variante” and the “Variante della Roggia”. It also has a long right-hander called the “Curva Parabolica”. Monza only has one real left-hander, the “Curva Del Serraglio” after the Lesmo double right-hander. Monza is different because the bike is upright for so much of the lap, during acceleration, top speed and braking phases. Monza is unique in that the bikes are running more often in a straight line than in a corner, the opposite of the other World Superbike circuits. In the morning’s free practice session, and having made some small changes to the bike’s set-up, Davide was soon able to make some very quick laps and register a time that remained the fastest overall time of the session. His team-mate Lorenzo continued to improve throughout, recording his fastest time in the final minutes and positioning himself seventh at the close of this first session. Later in the afternoon Althea’s flagbearers faced first qualifying on a much warmer track (45ËšC compared to 28ËšC this morning). Davide unfortunately suffered a technical problem that caused him to miss the best part of this important session while Lorenzo improved on his times by over half a second which augurs well for Sunday’s race. Giugliano thus closed in seventeenth position, having completed only one lap, while Baroni finished in seventh place. Davide Giugliano “My technicians are still working to understand exactly what happened with my bike but we are nevertheless confident because we could already see great improvement in the laps that I completed this morning. We didn’t have any major problems this morning and we’ll solve the small issue that came up this afternoon and do our best to improve tomorrow. We’re as confident as always.” Lorenzo Baroni “This morning we got off to quite a good start and I was lapping faster than last year. I also had good ideal times. This afternoon, with a new tyre, we were going well but then at one point maybe I entered the corner too fast and I think I maybe touched the kerb, causing me to lose the front. It was a pity because it was a new tyre and I could have done better. We’re aware though that there is still room for improvement in tomorrow’s session.” More, from a press release issued by Team Pedercini: In the Superstock morning’s free practice Bussolotti (1’47″594) took an excellent result, closing in fourth position. Sixth place for Staring (1’47″665) while Mercado (1’48″482) obtained the twelfth position. All three Pedercini riders raced here last week in the Italian Superstock 1000 Championship and so started today’s session using the same set up used in the Italian championship race. In the first qualifying session another good performance for Bussolotti (1’47″013). The Italian rider reached the fifth position, improving on his best lap time. Staring too improved (1’47″028), consolidating the sixth place set this morning while Mercado (1’48″181) was eleventh due to some set up problems. I’m just a little disappointed because at the end of the session I made a small mistake during my best lap with a new tyre, but overall I’m satisfied with my sixth position and I’m sure I can improve more tomorrow, to reach a good position on Sunday’s starting grid.” Marco Bussolotti : “I’m pretty happy with today’s results. In some corners I’m still suffering from a lack of grip on the rear and towards the end of the session my bike’s clutch did not work properly and I was not able to push any harder to reach a better position But my race pace is good, I was also able to stick some laps with the fastest riders and I’m confident for tomorrow qualifying.” Leandro “Tati” Mercado : “It was a difficult session for me this afternoon because my bike has some electronic problems and I lost a lot of time also during my fastest laps. I need more grip on the rear and tomorrow we’ll work hard to solve these two problems, but I’m sure we’ll be able to find a solution. I like this circuit and tomorrow I’ll try to improve my lap time and reach a better position.”
