Michael Barnes, 71 More, from a press release issued by Pirelli: Again it’s Attack’s Attard at Atlanta, Taking Second for Pirelli in FX Even the pavement sweats in Georgia, and so Saturday practice and qualifying was delayed until AMA Superbike officials could paint white outlines around the damp stains on Road Atlanta’s seeping surface, causing a crush in the day’s schedule, which was further complicated by impending afternoon rains forecast from the 93% humid skies. In the suddenly combined Superstock practice and qualifying, Geoff May, on his Pirelli-shod M4 EMGO Suzuki GSX-R1000 earned a front row spot for Sunday’s race, qualifying fourth. On the inside of row two will be Chris Ulrich on his Team Roadracingworld.com Suzuki, posting his best qualifying position for the season. New teammate Gary Mason showed his craft by setting the eighth-fastest time on the grid, sharing the second row with Ulrich. Their teammate Robertino Pietri laid down the tenth-best time of the session, giving Pirelli nearly half of the top-ten riders on the grid using Diablo Superbike Slicks. The Formula Xtreme race rushed to 3:00 pm on Saturday’s schedule saw Ben Attard take second place on his Team Attack Kawasaki ZX-6R, with teammate Steve Rapp finishing fourth. Attard not only set the race’s fastest lap, he set the race’s two fastest laps, each shown on AMA timing and scoring during the race but inexplicably deleted by errant data confusion after the race. Adding to Attard and Attack’s remarkable performances is the fact that those fastest laps were set in the last few closing laps of the race as Attard reeled in race-winner Joshua Hayes, finishing just .412 seconds adrift. After the race Attard said, “Our team is working great together and the new tires Pirelli is giving us work just how I like them to. I nut it out with both crew chiefs, Richard and Joey and we’re all together on everything.” Right behind Rapp in FX was Martin Cardenas in fifth, scoring yet another top-five finish for the M4 EMGO Suzuki team, giving Pirelli three of the top-five finishers at Road Atlanta, all on Diablo Superbike Slicks. Rounding out the top ten was Cory West on his Team Hunter Yamaha YZF R-6, tuned by Chuck Giacchetto. More, from a press release issued by Team M4 EMGO Suzuki: SUCCESSFUL DAY AT THE TRACK FOR M4 EMGO SUZUKI AT ROAD ATLANTA Team M4 EMGO Suzuki enjoyed a tremendous day at the track on Saturday at Road Atlanta, claiming a top-five race result, two front row grid positions, and an additional pair of second row starting spots. Colombian Martin Cardenas again proved to be a real contender in the Formula Xtreme class, guiding the team’s Pirelli-shod GSX-R600 FX racer to fifth place in Saturday’s once-stopped 13-lap race. It was the fourth time the former factory World 250 Grand Prix pilot has finished in the Formula Xtreme top five since joining the team five races back. Earlier in the day hometown favorite Geoff May put in a pair of excellent qualifying performances. Due to overnight showers and subsequent water seepage up through the track surface, the schedule was revised and the morning’s practice sessions were transformed into qualifying sessions at the last minute. May reacted admirably to the shift, earning a spot on the outside of the front row in Superstock with the fourth best time of the session (1:23.892), and then following that up with a dramatic second-placed qualifying run in Supersport thanks to a 1: 25.459 posted in the session’s final moments. May said, “They just sprung qualifying on us and everybody was dealing with adverse conditions. We didn’t know it was going to be qualifying on the Superstock bike until it was too late to do anything about it so we just worked on our race pace. We’ve been feeling like we were a little behind on our race set-up so we just worked on that the entire session. We figured we’d end up on the first or second row anyway and we got the first row, so that was really good. “On the 600 I had some issues with the bike mid-session and the mechanics were scrambling to get it working right. I got back out with just enough time left. I had to do a pretty scorching hot lap just to make it around and on my qualifying lap it was all or nothing. I laid it on the line and got second. We just got it in the nick of time. My crew was awesome — nobody panicked and they got the job done.” Looking ahead to tomorrow’s races, the Gainesville GA resident remarked, “I think we’re looking really good on the 600. We’re able to run what I did in qualifying on my race set-up and knock them out repeatedly.” Cardenas and Michael Beck will start the 15-lap Supersport race just one row behind May as all three of the Team M4 EMGO Suzuki GSX-R600s earned qualifying positions in the top eight. Cardenas was fifth best at 1:25.724 while Beck was just a little further back in eighth at 1:25.985.
