AMA Pro National Guard Superbike Championship point leader Josh Hayes turned the fastest lap time, a 1:26.110, during Sunday morning’s warm-up at the Triumph Superbike Classic at Barber Motorsports Park and then crashed two laps later, heavily damaging the Monster Energy Graves Yamaha YZF-R1 he planned to race. “I was on an in lap, and I just made a mistake,” Hayes told Roadracingworld.com. “I was just cruising and not as mentally alert as I would be if I was trying to go fast. It happened pretty early. I was still pretty upright and just touched the brakes and I lost the front.” The crash happened at the entrance Turn 11, one of the fastest parts of the 2.3-mile road course. Hayes said he “flattened out,” just slid on his back and escaped injury, but his Superbike flipped high in the air and suffered a lot of damage. Hayes said the bike he crashed was the one he planned to race Sunday, but now he will race the same YZF-R1 that he won Race One with on Saturday.
