Monster Energy Graves Yamaha’s Josh Hayes earned his fourth consecutive AMA Pro National Guard Superbike pole position during qualifying Saturday morning at Road America. Hayes’ lap time of 2:11.913 on his YZF-R1 was initially deemed a lap record based on the existing Road America lap record listed in the 2011 AMA Pro Road Racing Media Guide, a 2:11.970 turned by Mat Mladin in 2006. But further investigation by Roadracingworld.com discovered the AMA Pro Road Racing Media Guide was incorrect as Mladin had turned a 2:11.541 during qualifying in 2007. Mladin actually went even faster, turning a 2:11.208 during Superbike Race Two at Road America in 2006, but AMA Pro Racing only counts laps turned during qualifying as official lap records. Even though his time was not a new lap record, Hayes’ effort was remarkable considering the current Superbike technical rules are more restrictive than the rules were in 2006-2007 and considering the current Superbikes make less horsepower, according to Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Peter Doyle, who is Blake Young’s Crew Chief and was Mladin’s Crew Chief in 2006-2007.
