In Superstock qualifying, for Sunday’s final, May upped his position to 4th, taking the outside spot on the front row. Meanwhile, Chris Ulrich continues showing the renewed form he displayed at Daytona, qualifying his Roadracingworld.com Suzuki in 7th place, also on set of Pirelli Diablo Superbike Slicks. The Superstock final is Sunday. The sights in Saturday’s Supersport practice had M4 EMGO Suzuki rider Geoff May, at the front of the pack, setting the 3rd fastest time with fellow Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa rider Steve Rapp, on his Attack Kawasaki, right with May with the 4th-best lap time of the session. In Supersport qualifying, Michael Barnes jumped to 3rd fastest on his M4 EMGO Suzuki GSX-R600, with teammate May sliding in beside him on the front row with the fourth-quickest time. Attack Kawasaki riders Steve Rapp and Ben Attard qualified 8th and 9th on their ZX-6Rs. The Supersport race is Sunday. The smell of Saturday’s feature Formula Xtreme race was sweet, with Daytona 200 winner Steve Rapp running in 2nd for most of the race, eventually finishing on the podium in third and maintaining his points lead in the Formula Xtreme championship on Pirelli’s superb Diablo Superbike slicks. Rapp’s teammate Ben Attard was running 2nd at the close of the first lap when he lost balance between the track’s last two turns. Attard remounted to finish 23rd, after rejoining the race in last place, which was 35th. Usual Pirelli front-runner Michael Barnes had clutch issues on the start. Barnes pitted for an adjustment then rejoined the race to fight his way back to 15th, while Cory West leapt from his 11th-place qualifying position to an 8th-place finish on his Team Hunter Yamaha. The texture of the Formula Xtreme championship is rough, with Rapp making the most of his Pirelli’s abilities to keep the points lead, and Michael Barnes’ determination putting the Floridian at 4th in points for the season. Other top Pirelli riders include Joshua Day finishing 11th and David Anthony taking 10th, respectively putting them 5th and 6th in the FX championship to date, giving Pirelli five of the top seven positions. Reviewing the count that’s: Rapp 1st, Barnes 4th, Day 5th, Anthony 6th, Ben Attard 7th. More, from a press release issued by Team M4 EMGO Suzuki: DIFFICULT DAY FOR BARNES IN BARBER FORMULA XTREME Saturday was a mixed bag for Team M4 EMGO Suzuki at Barber Motorsports Park. The squad excelled in the day’s qualifying sessions, claiming three front row grid positions for Sunday’s finals, but had a tough outing in the Formula Xtreme contest. Teammates Michael Barnes and Geoff May will start tomorrow’s 17-lap Supersport final alongside each other on row one. Barnes posted the third fastest time (1:27.493) during qualifying aboard his Pirelli-shod Suzuki GSX-R600 Supersport racer. May was only fractionally behind, setting the fourth best lap of the session at 1: 27.502. Team M4 EMGO Suzuki will be represented by three riders on the front three rows of the Supersport race as up-and-comer Michael Beck qualified 12th in the class with a lap of 1:28.668. May will also start tomorrow’s Superstock final from the outside of row one, as the Georgian qualified fourth fastest in the big bore class aboard his fire-breathing GSX-R1000. He set a best time of 1: 26.157 around the hilly Alabama racetrack. The team entered Saturday’s 17-lap Formula Xtreme contest with high hopes after Barnes qualified just over a tenth of a second off of the pole in Friday’s qualifying session. Unfortunately, a technical issue prevented the Floridian from riding up to his full potential. Barnes soldiered on, however, picking up some very valuable championship points finishing in 15th position. Afterwards, Crew Chief Keith Perry said, “Every few seasons you’re going to have a race impacted by a mechanical problem. Unfortunately, today was that day for us. ‘Barney’ was a trooper though, and I’m really proud of the effort he gave for us out there today.” “We’re looking to make up for it tomorrow,” Perry continued. “We were strong in qualifying today and we expect to be contenders in Sunday’s races.”
