Meiring, 74 points More, from a press release issued by American Suzuki: M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas Podiums in Road America Formula Xtreme Race Round 5 AMA Formula Xtreme Elkhart Lake, WI Road America June 1 — 3, 2007 M4 EMGO Suzuki’s newest rider Martin Cardenas finished an impressive third position in his first-ever AMA Formula Xtreme race at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., on Saturday afternoon. This result is Cardenas’ first AMA podium. “Road America is similar to tracks I raced on in Europe — it is very fast and I like it,” said Cardenas, who is new to racing in the United States. “Today, my start wasn’t great and I had to come from the back. When I got into fourth place”¦ I kept pushing hard to close the gap. With two laps to go, Aaron (Gobert, in third place) made a mistake in the chicane and I was able to pass him on that lap.” Cardenas, 25, is riding for M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Michael Barnes, who was injured at the last Formula Xtreme race at Infineon Raceway in May. Cardenas, originally from Colombia, is the 2004 Spanish Supersport Champion and he campaigned the 2005 and 2006 FIM 250 World Championships. “I was racing last year in the 250 G.P.,” said Cardenas. “But I broke my collar bone mid-season and it didn’t heal properly so I missed several races. I had no team to run with this year, so I came to the U.S. to race the AMA series. Racing with the M4 EMGO Suzuki team is a very good opportunity for me and I am giving it my all and doing my very best.” All of Suzuki’s road race teams will return for round six of the AMA Superbike Series at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah, the weekend of June 22 – 24, 2007 AMA Formula Xtreme Top 10 Finishers: 1. Tony Meiring, Yamaha More, from a press release issued by Team M4 EMGO Suzuki: CARDENAS THIRD IN ELKHART FORMULA XTREME Team M4 EMGO Suzuki built upon Friday’s success at Road America with a podium-winning performance on Saturday. Substitute rider Martin Cardenas put in a stirring ride in the 10-lap Formula Xtreme race to claim a stellar third-place result for the team in his very first race filling in for the injured Michael Barnes in the class. The 25-year-old Colombian didn’t get an ideal start from his second-row starting position but refused to give in. He fought hard to chase the leaders down aboard his Pirelli-shod GSX-R600, climbing up the ranks and ultimately closing in on third-place runner Aaron Gobert on the race’s final lap. Cardenas made last-lap pass entering turn one and held off his rival for the final three and a half miles to the checkered flag. The result was the 2004 Spanish Supersport champion’s first podium finish in AMA competition. “My start wasn’t great so I had to come from the back,” he said. “When I got to fourth these three guys were like two seconds ahead of me. I kept pushing very hard the entire race to try to close the gap. In some laps I closed a little bit. Two laps to go Aaron made a mistake in the chicane. I passed him the next lap and got third.” He continued, “Riding for Team M4 EMGO Suzuki is a very big opportunity for me. I am giving it my all and doing my very best.” Wet weather in the early afternoon dampened the team’s Supersport and Superstock qualifying hopes somewhat following their promising practice showings on Friday. Geoff May, who was the fastest Supersport rider in the dry on Friday, claimed a second row grid position in drying conditions aboard his GSX-R600 with a best time of 2:35.863. Michael Beck will open his race from the fourth row after qualifying 14th at 2: 38.913 in the tricky conditions, while Cardenas will have to fight his way up from the 21st slot on the grid, qualifying with a best time of 2:41.267 after ranking sixth fastest in Friday’s dry session. Meanwhile, May picked up a front row grid position in the Superstock class. The Georgian circulated at 2: 54.369 aboard his GSX-R1000 in a steady rain, good enough for fourth best in the session.
