Kenny Riedmann (Tri Daytona 675), 1:38.590 More, from a press release issued by Team M4 Suzuki: WESTBY SEVENTH IN BARBER DSB QUALIFYING M4 Suzuki claimed their provisional positions on the grid for Round 5 of the 2011 AMA Pro Road Racing championships today at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, AL. Almost as soon as the weekend’s first practice began the area hit by a heavy rainfall. After a short delay, the action resumed and the day’s sessions were conducted in progressively dryer conditions. Martin Cardenas spent his afternoon getting accustomed to lapping his powerful GSX-R1000 Superbike around the same tight circuit where he rode a 600cc Daytona SportBike to a triumphant double victory and championship win in last year’s season finale. The Colombian finished Friday on the provisional second row, qualifying eighth fastest in Superbike at 1:27.300 with an eye on moving up the charts tomorrow. Dane Westby found himself in a similar position in Daytona SportBike, qualifying seventh fastest today. His best lap in SportBike qualifying was a 1:30.620. Westby is optimistic about continuing his recent run of strong form this weekend as his season continues on an upward trend. “It was a pretty good day,” Westby said. “Seventh isn’t really where I want to be but we were just talking about some changes and I think we’ve really got something for them tomorrow. We would have been really happy with seventh not too long ago. Things are really looking up for us. “We’re comfortable in the wet or dry and I think we’ve got something for them in the dry. At Road America we were able to run up front because of the hard braking and here we’re going to hone some of our other skills. We’re getting this shaped into a well-rounded package. The guys and I have found some things in the bike and it’s all just coming together.” Meanwhile, Santiago Villa opened the day in impressive fashion, notching up the fourth best time in the difficult damp conditions of the first SportBike free practice. He ultimately clocked the 14th best time during qualifying, circulating at 1:32.452. Chris Ulrich will not compete with the team this weekend as the Superbike competitor is still suffering injuries from an Infineon raceway crash. The final grids for the Barber Motorsports Park Superbike and SportBike doubleheaders will be determined following tomorrow morning’s second qualifying session, after which the weekend’s first races will get underway place in the afternoon.
