Lowry Ends Season With Formula One Win, Overall Title

Defending Willow Springs Motorcycle Club Overall Champion Karl Lowry wrapped up the 2008 season this weekend with four wins, including his fourth win of the season in the Toyota Gold Cup Unlimited Formula 1 class, and clinched the overall title for the second season in a row.

Riding a Dunlop-shod, Graves Motorsports-backed Yamaha YZF-R1, Lowry led from start to finish, earning $3000 and taking the checkered flag 13.685 seconds ahead of second place finisher Brant Wiwi. Riding his Pirelli-shod, West Coast GP Cycles-backed Yamaha YZF-R1, Wiwi held second for the entire 20-lap, 50-mile race and finished 11 seconds clear of the battle for third.

Jeff Tigert, riding his Dunlop-equipped, American Honda-backed CBR1000RR, finished third but barely. While Tigert came across the stripe in third on the second lap and every lap afterward, he finished less than half a second in front of hard-charging Reno Karimian aboard a Dunlop-shod Suzuki GSX-R1000. Asked on the podium about his 2009 racing plans, Tigert revealed that he wanted to take a run at winning the WSMC Overall Championship.

Lowry also won the Open Superbike, 600cc Superstock and 600cc Modified Production races this weekend. His season at Willow Springs’ main 2.5-mile track was nothing short of amazing, with Lowry not only taking the club’s overall Championship, but winning the Formula 1, 600cc Superstock, 650cc Superbike, Open Superbike and Open Superstock class titles.

Mitchell Wissner won the Open Superstock race, while Chris Duran took the Open Modified Production checkers. Andy Palmer, who dominated the small-bore twins classes all season, took four wins on Sunday, re-setting the lap record in Lightweight Twins and finishing third in the club’s overall standings, behind 750cc Superstock and Formula 40 Heavyweight class champion Jeff Stern and just ahead of Chris Duran.

Several area freeways were closed due to raging wildfires on Saturday, including Highway 14, the main route between the Los Angeles basin and Willow Springs. Fires forced additional closures of I-405, I-210 and I-5 alternate routes. At one time on Saturday, the only freeway route to the track open to riders coming from the Los Angeles area involved a lengthy detour to I-15 North to Highway 138, rejoining Highway 14 beyond the fire closure.

Highway 14 reopened late Sunday afternoon.
