ESTOK WINS ASRA THUNDERBIKE NATIONAL AT BARBER PARK

Buell Riders Finish First and Third; Estok Adds to Series Points Lead

LEEDS, Ala. (August 12, 2007) Deeley H-D/Buell Canada/Ruthless Racing rider Dave Estok rode a Buell Firebolt XB12R to win the American Sportbike Racing Association (ASRA) Pro Thunderbike National at Barber Motorsports Park. Hal’s H-D/Buell/Hal’s Speed Shop rider Dan Bilansky finished third, also on a Buell XB12R.

Because of a tight weekend schedule, there was no qualifying session for ASRA National classes. Thunderbike riders were positioned for the start of the 10-lap race based on season points, which placed Estok on the pole and Bilansky beside him in second position. Estok jumped out to a quick lead at the start of the 10-lap national, but was soon engaged in a wheel-to-wheel battle with BMW rider Nate Kern. The pair raced in tight formation the entire distance, with Kern taking a brief lead on lap four, only to be immediately re-passed by Estok. At the finish, Estok prevailed by 1.164 seconds over Kern, followed by Bilansky.

“That was quite a battle,” said Estok. “Kern pushed me the entire race and never let me relax. Thanks to the Deeley crew for putting a strong Buell under me again today as we race for the Thunderbike championship.”

Buell rider Joe Rozynski (Sound Waves/Hal’s Speed Shop) finished fourth, ahead of the Suzuki of Alex Marshall, and Buell riders Greg Avello (Badger Motorsports/Hal’s Speed Shop), Sam Rozynski (Sound Waves/Hal’s Speed Shop), David Meyers (Delta Distributing) and James Delk Jr. (Jimmy-Turner).

Bilansky, the defending ASRA Pro Thunderbike national champion, was hospitalized with a respiratory infection the week before the race, and drove from his Wisconsin home on Saturday to make the Thunderbike start at Barber.

“I told the doctors I was leaving to make this race,” said Bilansky. “I didn’t want to give this championship to Dave (Estok) by missing a race. By placing third the Hal’s team stays in contention for the title.”

Another title contender missed the Thunderbike national at Barber. Deeley H-D/Buell Canada/Ruthless Racing rider Darren James, second in Thunderbike points coming into the weekend, had a scheduling conflict and raced in his native Canada on Sunday. James is the defending Canada Thunder national champion and was third in 2007 Canada Thunder points after three events coming into this weekend. He placed fourth in the Canada Thunder race held this weekend at Atlantic Motorsports Park in Shubenacadie, N.S.

After six of eight ASRA Pro Thunderbike rounds, Buell riders dominate the ASRA Pro Thunderbike season points standings. Estok leads the series with 182 points. Bilansky (145 points) moves ahead of James (120), followed by Sam Rozynski (116) and Joe Rozynski (112).

In Championship Cup Series (CCS) sprint racing on Saturday, Estok rode a Buell XB12R to win the Expert Thunderbike event. On Sunday, Estok won the CCS Expert SuperTwins race, also a Buell XB12R.

The next event on the eight-race 2007 ASRA Pro Thunderbike series schedule is the Summer’s End Cycle Fest, September 8-9, at Summit Point Motorsports Park, Summit Point, W.V.

STEVE PLATER FINISHES SECOND AT OSCHERSLEBEN

As part of a three-man team riding for Kawasaki France, Steve Plater has finished in second place in round four of the FIM World Endurance championship held at Oschersleben in Germany at the weekend.

The long-awaited duel at the Oschersleben 24 Hours between Suzuki Endurance Racing Team and Team Kawasaki France didn’t last longer than four hours. After a neck and neck start to the race between the two official machines, the tension eventually took its toll with a fall by Gwen Giabbani from the Kawasaki France machine just after 6pm on Saturday.

Delayed even further by a fall by Plater’s Spanish teammate Julian Mazuecos the team dropped down the order but a spirited ride by Plater saw him make up time and eventually regain fourth place.

With the demise of the Phase One Yamaha team, Kawasaki France was elevated to third spot and towards the end of the gruelling 24-hour race benefited from an engine problem that befell the Yamaha Austria team to move into second place.

But despite setting the fastest lap time of the race Plater was unable to catch SERT who finished the race 12 laps ahead of Kawasaki France.

“It’s a shame we had to miss the last round in Japan,” said Plater. “But all is not lost and we are only 32 points away from the title. There are 35 points on offer to the winner of each round and it will only take SERT to have a dnf and we are right back in contention again.”

Plater will be back in action for Kawasaki France on August 21/22 when he tests for the team at Magny Cours, the venue for the Bol d’Or, after which he returns to domestic action and his home round of the British Superbike championship at Cadwell Park on August 27 where he will be reunited with his Team AIM Yamaha R1.

The Bol d’Or is now on the horizon (September 15/16) and promises to be a decisive race in the Championship, before the final round takes place in Qatar in November.

GO BIG’S GLENN RETAINS CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD, MILLSON’S WEEKEND A ROLLERCOASTER RIDE

(Shubenacadie, NS) Paul Glenn (Keene, ON) of Go Big Racing will take an 11 point lead into the final round of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship AM 600 Sport Bike Class after a third place finish at Atlantic Motorsport Park in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia over the weekend. Israel Johnas (Oak Lake, MB) closed the gap to 11 points with a second place finish, but Glenn is still confident heading to Shannonville Motorsport Park for the final race of the season.

“I know that the team will have me ready for the final race” commented Glenn “all I need to do is go out and run a strong race and hopefully we will win the championship.”

Go Big Racing’s Pro rider, Ross Millson (Hamilton, ON) rode to a twelfth place finish in the Pro 600 Sport Bike Class and had to retire after an accident on the ninth lap of the Pro Superbike race.

“I was feeling really good on the superbike, I got into turn 1 a little hard” said Millson of his crash “I lost the frontend early in corner 1 and slid out of twelfth place.”

Even with the crash, the weekend was not a loss for Millson as he posted some excellent times in practice and enjoyed riding healthy for the first time in many weeks.

Next up for the Go Big Racing team is the final round of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship at Shannonville Motorsport Park from August 31 September 2. This event coincides with Round 6 of the R.A.C.E Super Series that will also be held that weekend at Shannonville.

NELSONS LEDGES, Ohio Three hours and less than three-tenths of a second, it can’t get much closer than that in an endurance race.

That blink-of-an-eye difference is all that separated Midweight Division points’ leaders Team Two Goofs and CamCool Racing when time expired in Fasttrax’s 3-hour endurance series event Saturday, Aug. 11 at Nelsons Ledges, Ohio.

CamCool riders Robb Campbell, Brett Campbell and Rob McNeel completed 131 laps in a time of 2:58:45.639 when the clock stopped compared to the 131 laps in a time of 2:58:45.833 for the Two Goofs’ team of Pete Smakula and Mark Jordan. The teams placed third and fourth respectively in the Midweight Division.

Masters of the Mountain – Round 5 results

Miller Motorsports Park, Tooele Utah — Round 5 of the Honda Presents the Plaza Cycle Masters of the Mountain motorcycle racing series saw some of the closest competition to date, highlighted by a strong field of Novice and Amateur competitors. David Lewis hunted down and upset youngster Shane Mcgoey to win Novice GTU and run the fastest lap of the day for any class, with a 1:37.1 on the MMP East Course. Mcgoey went on to win Amateur GTU, Novice GTO and Amateur GTO on his Pirelli shod Kawasaki ZX6R.

The entry-level Clubman races were once again dominated by Dusty Beckstrom, who will soon be running with the highly competitive Novice/Amateur field for future MoM events.

With absence of #1 MoM plateholer Aaron Clark of Longmont, CO., Jason Parkinson took the opportunity to grab the 2007 points lead winning Open Superbike, Open Superstock, and KOM-O on his Michelin shod Suzuki GSXR1000. Parkinson was dogged all weekend by impressive runs from Dylon Husband. Jeff Brown of Westminster CO. had his best MoM weekend yet, dominating the middleweight classes with wins in Middleweight Superbike, KOTM-U and Middleweight Superstock on his Yamaha R6.

The Endurance race points lead heated up after several teams had mechanical troubles, leaving just a single point separating the leaders going into the next MoM round. The Travis Child team won GTO with the Oleg Pianykh team taking GTU honors.

The Honda Presents the Plaza Cycle Masters of the Mountains series is a seven-race motorcycle road racing series developed by Miller Motorsports Park, run by the Utah Sportbike Association (USBA) and sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) to encourage and develop fun and competitive road racing at the club and regional levels. The series features class structures that make it easy for competitors from multiple sanctioning groups and areas to compete, and race-day schedules that recognize that some competitors will travel long distances to compete, as well as a growing contingency program. Returning to Barber Motorsports 4 months after a horrific crash that left BMW racer Nate Kern in the hospital for a week in May, you would never even know an accident took place! This past weekend’s ASRA and CCS Twin Sprint races at Barber Motorsports Park saw Kern take a win in CCS Supertwins and Thunderbike races. The second place finish in the ASRA Pro Thunderbike race was a spectacular race long battle with accomplished Buell racer Dave Estok. The two riders put on a great show with positions being swapped mid race. “I knew the nature of the track did not agree with our longer wheel base and on the flip side favored our competitions” said Kern. Nate tried making a deep pass into turn 4 and was not able to make it stick. En route to his second place finish in the national race, Kern set a new class track record for ASRA Pro Thunderbike with a 1:33.501 lap time.

In the 5 lap Middleweight Grand Prix race, Nate and his BMW R1200S Boxer were able to come from his row four starting position to take 4th place against class leading 600s.

This momentum has Kern excited about his first time out to Infineon Raceway for this weekend’s upcoming AFM races. Nate will ride San Jose BMW’s second R1200S in various races with Moto-ST teammate Brian Parriott.

Record Heat Brings Record Times While Wood Clinches Title

When the ASRA Pro Series arrived at Barber Motorsports Park the topic on everyone’s mind wasn’t how to win the race, but more on how to survive the brutal 102-105 degree temperatures without suffering heat stroke. With the high temperatures keeping entry levels down, the fast guys got down to business and set new records in all four ASRA events.

ASRA Superstock was the first event of the afternoon and Robert Jensen on the Butlery Machinery Suzuki 1000 took the hole shot and never looked back taking the flag to flag win in the class. This left Jeff Wood on the Bettencourt Yamaha R-1 to hold off the challenges of Andy Feuersthaler and Ben Thompson for second place. Thompson was able to move the Evan Steele Performance Suzuki 1000 into the last podium position by lap three and rode to finish just under 2 seconds behind Wood. Jensen used Michelin tires to post a record time of 1:28.196 on the way to the win by 2.87 seconds and cut Jeff Wood’s championship lead to just 19 points with two rounds left in the series.

Next up it was the ASRA Superbikes taking their shot at the 2.38 mile road course of Barber Motorsports Park. Jeff Wood, on the Bettencourt’s R-6 took the holeshot, but his leads was short lived as by the time they completed the first circuit it was Robert Jensen on his own Yamaha R-6 at the point. As the familiar battle raged between Wood and Jensen, a new ingredient to the mix was putting himself in a position to challenge the ASRA regulars, Corey West, the Yamaha rider from Eureka Springs, Arkansas who reset the ASRA Superbike record to 1:29.504 in his pursuit of the leaders. As they came by for lap two of eight, it was West on the Team Hunter Yamaha in second buy he wasn’t finished yet, by the end of the third lap West was in the lead. The challenge from West was all it took for Jensen and Wood to put the pressure on and after lap 5, Wood had regained the lead, even if it was only by 1 bike length. For the next two laps Wood was able to hold the others at bay until lap 7. Trying to get a great drive out of turn 6, with Jensen and West trying to dive low and make the pass on the way into the turn, Jeff Wood got the machine sideways and was high-sided to the grass.. This left West and Jensen to decide the final outcome Jensen was credited with the lead on lap 7, but it was Corey West who led the final lap to take his second ASRA Pro win of the season. Wood was able to pick up and restart his machine, limping to a 10th place finish. The miscue dropped Wood’s point lead to 48 points from 66 coming into the event, a trend he’ll want to correct at the next round.

Not to be out-done, the Thunderbike racers set out on a tear of their own with Sam Rozynski taking the hole shot on his Soundwaves.com Buell XB-12R, followed closely by Dave Estok on the Deely H-D Buell XB-9R and brother Joe Rozynski on his Soundwaves.com sponsored Buell XB-12R. Within ½ a lap, Nate Kern on the Morton’s BMW 1200 had joined the battle along with defending Thunderbike Champion Dan Bilansky on the D&G Racing Buell XB-12R. As they completed lap one, it was Estok, Kern, Bilansky and the Brothers Rozynski in the lead group with the Garrett Rick Mellimoto Ducati 1000 riding hard to catch the leaders from the back of the starting grid. By lap three, it was a three bike break-away with Estok, Kern and Bilansky gapping the Mellimoto Ducati 1000 of Rick by 5 seconds. At this point Kern started applying the pressure on Estok, the current point leader and former champion in the class. Diving hard under Estok in turn six, Kern’s momentum carried him wide allowing Estok to use the “swoop and swap” move by breaking a little early and letting Kern run by, thus giving Estok the line back for the perfect drive and back into the lead. After a few laps of this battle, they were able to stretch a 2-second lead over third place Bilansky and the stage was set for the final run to the checkered flag for these two aggressive competitors. After drawing even and pressuring Estok for the final two laps, it was the better handling Buell XB-9R that carried Estok to the win, followed by Kern, Bilansky, Rick and Joe Rozynski to round out the top five. Kern on the Morton’s BMW set fast lap at 1:33.515, almost a second quicker than the old record. Garret Rick was later disqualified for failing to report to post race inspection, moving Joe Rozynski into 4th place.

The final ASRA event of the day was Factory Pro Sportbike presented by Strapless Transport Stands, giving defending ASRA Sportbike Champion Jeff Wood one more opportunity for victory in a series he has dominated for the past three seasons. After his rival Robert Jensen defeated him in the Superstock race and crashing in the Superbike race, Wood was determined to turn his day around. Even though Jensen on the Butler Machine Yamaha got the hole shot, it was Jeff Wood who put on the ridding clinic for the rest of the field. From the first lap to last lap, the Bettencourt’s Yamaha rider was .1 to .3 seconds a lap quicker than anyone else, stretching his lead to 3.9 seconds by the end on the 10 lap final. On lap three, Wood piloted his Dunlop-shod R-6 to a new lap record for the class of 1:29.599, and with the win, clinches the ASRA Factory Pro Sportbike title for 2007. Wood now leads Robert Jensen by 86 points with only 72 points available over the last two rounds of the Series. Congratulations Jeff Wood, 2007 ASRA Factory Pro Sportbike Champion!
