The opening of the second of two Dunlop/AMA Pro Road Racing tire tests this winter at Daytona International Speedway (DIS) may be delayed Monday due to rain. The test was scheduled to run from noon until 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time Monday, but rain currently falling at the track may cause on-track activities to start late, if at all. Weather forecasts call for more rain, possibly including thunderstorms, later Monday. According to AMA Pro Road Racing Race Director David McGrath, Dunlop did not bring rain tires to DIS and there will be no riding in “wet conditions.” The weather forecast for Tuesday is much better, however, with only a 20% chance of rain with daytime high temperatures above 70 degrees F expected. McGrath said there is no possibility of the test extending into Wednesday. Dunlop conducted a tire test at DIS in December 2010 to start getting a handle on the track’s recently-repaved 2.5-mile tri-oval. That test (which was also affected by rain) was attended by only a handful of teams and riders. The current test is slated to have over 50 riders evaluating Dunlop’s newest Daytona-spec tires. The 2011 AMA Pro National Guard Superbike Championship begins March 10-12 at DIS. Update: Testing has been officially rained out Monday at DIS. According to McGrath, who held a rider’s meeting mid-day, on-track activities will begin as soon as the track dries Tuesday morning and will run all day, without a lunch break, to help make up for the time lost on Monday.
