George Bruggenthies* (Ver) *President of Road America, riding his SuperMoto bike More, from a press release issued by Daytona International Speedway: Filice Flying Around DIS During AHRMA DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (March 6, 2006) — Jimmy Filice, the legendary dirt and road racer and motorcycle Hall of Famer, is busier than he expected to be during this year’s Daytona 200 Week By Honda. While the retired racer’s focus has been on his son Justin’s career in motorcycle racing, the 43-year-old Filice climbed aboard one of Charlie Benton’s Triumphs on Monday during the AHRMA vintage events at historic Daytona International Speedway. “I didn’t get the phone call actually until about a month ago,” said Filice, who has motorcycle legends Jay Springsteen and Gary Nixon as teammates during AHRMA days. “They asked. I didn’t hesitate. I said sure. Then I started thinking about it going, ‘I hope I can do it. I need to train.’ “We started last Thursday and we’ve been non stop. It’ll be non-stop until Saturday. I’ll run both (AHRMA) days and then we’ll start up Wednesday (with AMA) which is all right. It’s nice to busy.” Filice, who has won the AMA 250 Grand Prix at Daytona five times, finished third in Monday’s Triumph Thruxton event. “A win tomorrow would be super,” said Filice, who nowadays works with a management company representing riders. “I think I could’ve pulled it off today. I was a little cautious . . . just taking my time feeling guys out and how they are riding.” While he’s hungry for DIS victory in Tuesday’s AHRMA races, he admits his son’s race efforts are more important to him this week. “It’s for him,” Filice said. “My day has been here and done. This is just enjoyable for me. I love the Speedway. It has been kind to me throughout my career. It’s just a great thing to be in Daytona. “You always want to win, especially at Daytona. I don’t care what class you ride. If they ran tri-cycles out there, you would want to win. It’s just Daytona.” Filice and his father Jim are heavily involved in Justin’s race aspirations, which will include entries in Thursday’s Supersport event and Saturday’s 65th Daytona 200 By Honda. While the Filice family has some support from Honda, it’s basically a family-run operation. “Me and my father are basically a team,” said Jimmy Filice. “It’s more relaxing for him and not as much pressure that he’ll get eventually. If we finished first or last we’re happy as long as he finishes. Next year we’ll push for a ride for him because he’s getting to that point where he’s beyond us. My job is to turn the throttle. I don’t know how to turn wrenches very well. But I do understand some things.” Filice has five starts in the Daytona 200 By Honda with his best finish being a sixth-place run in the 1985 motorcycle classic when he was part of the famous Super Team Yamaha effort. He hopes his son Justin will follow in his tire tracks. “He has a lot of talent,” Jimmy Filice said of his 20-year-old son. “The next couple of years you’ll be seeing him running up front.” AHRMA vintage races continue on Tuesday.
