Yamaha Prepping For Daytona 200 By Honda Week

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (March 4, 2006) — Factory Yamaha is getting a headstart on Daytona 200 Week By Honda.

For the second straight year, the factory Yamaha team and its fleet of racers is using this weekend’s CCS/ASRA events as a test session in advance of next week’s AMA events, highlighted by the prestigious 65th Daytona 200 By Honda on Saturday, March 11.

Jason DiSalvo, Jamie Hacking and Eric Bostrom are all shaking down their Yamahas as they prep for their respective events. DiSalvo and Bostrom will compete in next Saturday’s Daytona 200 By Honda Formula Xtreme event as well as Thursday’s Superstock race while Hacking will race in the Superstock and Supersport events.

During this weekend’s CCS/ASRA events, you won’t see any of the riders take any victories as they will all pull off the course on the final lap of their races. Their lone goal is to get track time on the 2.95-mile motorcycle road course as they fine-tune their race machines.

“We’re just sorting out the last little minor details and just make sure we get a good setup for the race here,” said DiSalvo, a New York native and son of a former racer (Jim DiSalvo). “When race time comes we can worry about getting those engines that will be showing up here to the track and getting those put in and getting those dialed in. We won’t have to worry about the suspension setup because we’ll already be pretty close on a baseline setup.”

Turning additional laps at “The World Center of Racing” during the CCS/ASRA weekend does come with some risk. Last year, then-Yamaha rider Damon Buckmaster suffered injuries in an incident that prevented him from racing in the AMA-portion races at DIS.

“We did it last year for the first time,” DiSalvo said. “There were mixed emotions about it. No matter what you do, if you’re riding or anything else, there’s risk in everything. If I wasn’t here I might be riding dirt bikes training for this race.

“The (reward) is huge. If we can get a good setup here and come into the AMA weekend and be the fastest out of the box. Just to get that little leg up. I’m surprised more teams don’t do this. There’s nothing in the AMA regulations that say we can’t run a race weekend prior to the AMA event. It really surprises me that more teams don’t take an advantage of it.”

The 22-year-old DiSalvo, a former AMA Horizon winner, is geared up about his first start in the Daytona 200 By Honda. He feels confident about his training and conditioning entering one of the longest and most enduring races that he has ever raced.

“I’m pretty confident going into here,” said DiSalvo, who finished second in the 2005 Superstock standings and third in the Supersport standings. “I think if we get out there and don’t make any silly mistakes and run the pace I know I can run, I think it’ll be my race.”

Hoffman finishes sixth: Nicole Hoffman, a Palm Coast resident who works in the Brand and Consumer Marketing department at NASCAR, finished sixth in the Expert Lightweight SuperSport event aboard the No. 16 Suzuki 650.

Buell XB-RR Victory: Rico Penzkofer of Germany captured victory in Saturday’s final race of the day the six-lap SuperTwins event riding for Buell of Hannover. The victory was the first for the Buell XB-RR at Daytona.
