What happens or does not happen Sunday at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca will depend on the condition of the newly-repaved track surface. After Saturday’s practice, qualifying and racing in extreme temperatures, as high as 103°F according to one AMA team, the fresh asphalt started breaking up in turns three and nine. Several riders in Saturday’s AMA Superbike race said they were “roosted” with broken asphalt when behind other riders and that a “hole” was starting to develop in Rainey Curve, turn nine. It is unclear if any attempt to repair the track surface was made overnight. Sunday morning, Dorna Sports “strongly recommended” to Laguna Seca officials that nothing happen on the track before the MotoGP practice and race, scheduled for 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. local time, respectively. Laguna Seca took that recommendation and postponed the practices and race for AMA Supersport and Superstock until after the MotoGP race Sunday afternoon. That is, of course, assuming that the MotoGP riders will agree to deal with the deteriorating racing surface and actually race. If the MotoGP race happens, AMA officials and a small group of riders will inspect the track after the MotoGP race and before AMA practice starts. The decision on whether AMA riders will race will have to be made immediately, according to AMA Pro Racing’s Ken Rogers, who briefed riders and teams in tech inspection tent in the paddock at 9:45 a.m. Sunday morning. “We will access the situation then to make sure you have a safe surface to race on,” said Rogers, who is the Director Timing & Scoring but was conducting the meeting while AMA Pro Racing Road Race Series Director Ron Barrick conducted a track inspection. If the track is deemed safe for racing, Supersport and Superstock will each get a short practice, followed by both races. Right now, each race is still scheduled to go the full, 17-lap distance, but considering Laguna Seca has a 6:00 p.m. noise curfew and that a break will be required between races for riders in both events, it is likely that the race distances will change. Stay tuned”¦ Tentative Schedule: 10:00 – 10:20 a.m. MotoGP Practice 2:00 p.m. MotoGP Race (32 laps) 3:15 p.m. AMA Track Inspection 3:25 – 3:45 p.m. Pro Honda Oils AMA Supersport Practice 3:55 – 4:15 p.m. Repsol Lubricants AMA Superstock Practice 4:40 p.m. Pro Honda Oils AMA Supersport Race (17 laps) 5:25 p.m. Repsol Lubricants AMA Superstock Race (17 laps) More, from a press release issued by AMA Pro Racing: AMA Pro Racing Statement Regarding Sunday Schedule Change AMA Pro Racing has confirmed that Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca officials and FIM Race Direction have mandated that the AMA Supersport event and the AMA Superstock event, originally schedule for 11:30a and 3:45p respectively, be rescheduled to run at the end of the day. The Pro Honda Oils Supersport Championship presented by Shoei will now run at 4:30p immediately followed by the Repsol Lubricants Superstock Race at 5:15p. “Obviously we’re extremely disappointed that this situation has occurred forcing us to comply with this decision,” said AMA Pro Racing Road Race Series Manager Ron Barrick Sunday morning. Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca track officials issued a statement early Sunday stating that in order to ‘defend the integrity of the racing surface and the execution of the Grand Prix “¦ all other racing activity on Sunday, July 23 should be postponed until after the Grand Prix race.’ Barrick stated that AMA Pro Racing officials will also be monitoring the race surface throughout the day to ensure its integrity for the AMA championship races. “Hopefully, the track will not deteriorate further and we’ll be able to run our races safely at the end of the day,” said Barrick. “We’ll perform a track inspection prior to our competitors entering the track to determine whether or not the racing surface is acceptable.” Further information will issued if necessary.
